The SDGs are a call for action by all countries to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. We are proud to have worked on #SDG7 or #AffordableAndCleanEnergy for over 35 years. According to the 🇺🇳 #UN: “From 2015 to 2021, the proportion of the global population with access to electricity has increased from 87 percent to 91 percent. As thousands marched in NYC ahead of the UN summit, demanding an end to fossil fuels and highlighting the UN's 2015 sustainable development goals, the renewable energy market plays a crucial role. Estimated to grow at a CAGR of 8.91% between 2022 and 2027, with a forecasted increase of 1,776.08 GW, its growth hinges on factors like rising global energy demand and government support. These policies encourage the adoption of solar PV systems, offering incentives, subsidies, and tax benefits to producers and consumers. For instance, the US investment tax credit (ITC) boosts solar PV energy adoption. The protesters' calls for declaring a climate emergency align with the market trend of zero-energy buildings (ZEBs). These energy-efficient structures, which generate energy using renewables like solar PV systems, are gaining prominence globally. Governments worldwide are implementing regulations and mandates to promote ZEBs, fostering the use of solar PV systems. While climate activists demand an end to fossil fuels, competition from fossil fuels remains a challenge for the renewable energy market. Many countries, including the US, have historically relied on abundant fossil fuels for electricity generation, posing obstacles to the transition to renewables. As scientists warn of the urgent need to curb CO2 emissions, the renewable energy market's growth and the activists' demands become increasingly intertwined. As G7 energy ministers meet starting this weekend, Soraya FETTIH and I write for Euronews why rich nations must provide support for the energy transition and why #France is well positioned to stop token gestures and show some real #climate leadership. France is in various task force and was host of last years PACT Summit, but far more fundamental changes are necessary. A good and necessary first step for France would consist of fulfilling the already made commitment of the Clean Energy Transition Partnership to re-channel public oversea finance towards #renewables.
