Networking, a warm introduction or a day of shadowing are just some of the instruments that have proven to be extremely valuable and helpful. They are also instruments that are not that difficult or expensive at all. Above all, it requires genuine attention, interest and a healthy degree of curiosity. The social, political, and humanitarian crisis in Haiti has rapidly deteriorated in recent weeks. Since the 2010 earthquake shattered Haiti, the situation in the country has progressively gotten worse during the past decade and hundreds of thousands of Haitians have been forced to leave their homes in search of safety. Over the years, Upwardly Global has helped hundreds of Haitians, including many with Temporary Protected Status (TPS). With the most recent developments, thousands of additional people will be forced to uproot their families, abandon their careers, and leave the country. Temporary Protected Status is a critical tool to help those seeking safety. It protects them from deportation and allows them to obtain or keep a work permit. The extension of TPS is critical to Haitians’ ability to sustain themselves here in the United States. In December last year, the Department of Homeland Security granted the extension of TPS for Haitians until August 3, 2024. We should support an additional extension of TPS, which various advocacy organizations are advocating for. However, to truly help the Haitian community here in the United States, the government and nonprofit organizations should invest more in policies and programs specifically designed to help Haitians not only survive in the immediate future but thrive over the long term. Offering shelter and giving a hand up to those seeking safety doesn’t drain on our system. In reality those seeking safety here give back to our communities and to our country more than they take. Watch Jacky Salomon Petion’s (an Upwardly Global’s Haitian alum) story below. Jacky is a remarkable Haitian who went from living in a homeless shelter to navigating the corridors of a cardiac floor to a coveted residency program. His journey is a perfect example of what happens when we successfully include people into our communities and workforce.

I've been in the business of helping refugees and immigrants find training, support, and employment for over a decade. Here are a few major takeaways from my years with Amplio, Diversity Insight Staffing, Tekton Career Training/Refcode. 1) Refugees are resilient, while most Americans I meet are soft. - Don't take my word for it. From our research & experience refugees are nearly 10x as likely to keep a job vs. the average American. 2) Refugees add value to those they are around. - Every single employer I've ever worked with says the same thing. The rich culture, experience, education, and unique point of view refugees bring are a HUGE value add to our organization. 3) Refugees just need the opportunity. - 98% of displaced people (100MM globally btw!) are either internally displaced or displaced in a bordering country. - 2% of refugees end up in one of the many countries that participate in the UNHCR program. - That means a fraction of a fraction of refugees end up in the US. - They are extremely humble and for the majority just need someone willing to give them a shot. - I've seen refugees go from zero education to fully certified welders, electricians, and coders in 1/10 of the time that it takes a normal person. What can we do as business people to support refugees you might ask? 1) Hire refugees Diversity Insight Staffing 2) Give to organizations like Tekton Career Training, Refcode, Refuge Coffee Co.®, Friends of Refugees who are helping refugees with upward mobility and job security. 3) Come hang with me in Clarkston (the most diverse square mile in America, just down the road from Atlanta) and meet some of my refugee friends! #refugeeswelcome #hirerefugees

As we step into 2024, let us take a moment to consider the importance of diversity and inclusivity in the workplace. I urge American employers to support the hiring of Refugees and Newcomers who are seeking employment and self-sufficiency. Refugees possess unique talents and skills that can greatly benefit organizations. By investing in these individuals within the first few weeks of their employment, organizations can foster teamwork, strong work ethic, diverse working experience, and achieve company goals. Creating job opportunities for refugees and immigrants not only promotes diversity and inclusivity but also positively impacts the lives of families who have fled their countries in search of better opportunities. Your support in hiring refugees and immigrants is highly appreciated, and I am confident that it will lead to a more prosperous and inclusive society. Let's work together to create a brighter future for all. #HireRefugees #CreateJobsForRefugees #RefugeeHiringIsTheBestInvestment

A conversation that I have been observing at length in recent times. Looking the case with a workforce planning and talent-focused lens (with a distinct emphasis on agency), there is an integrative and pragmatic approach that offers a range of benefits to both the job seeker and organization. 💡 Employers would have the opportunity to hire from a pool of people with character and commitment, people whose life experience has set them up to be resilient, hardworking and patient. 💡 While refugees may find it difficult to enter the workforce with barriers in qualification and local experience, they have many benefits as potential employees such as initiative and a strong work ethic, dependability, willingness to take on entry-level or manual jobs as well as entrepreneurial and small business skills. A balanced pragmatic approach to workplace integration and opportunity explicitly recognizes refugees’ agency and skills. I'd welcome resource recommendations and conversation points if you (or anybody in your network) have a few up your sleeve 💭
Hiring refugees is not just 'doing a good thing' – research shows it can also help businesses
