As recovery from Tuesday’s tornadoes begins, United Way SCMI and Kalamazoo Community Foundation (KZCF) are joining in collaboration to lend our shared strengths to relief efforts. We are working alongside partners at Gryphon Place and 211 as they identify community needs and determine how best to mobilize resources. Our hearts are with the resilient communities in Houston, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic who are facing significant challenges brought by Hurricane Beryl. This unprecedented Category Five hurricane, the earliest on record in a century, is stark evidence of the realities of our changing climate. The aftermath of the hurricane may be overwhelming, and I want to express our deepest sympathy for any hardship experienced by those impacted. It's been just over a week since the fires started on Maui – here's what United Way is doing: Maui United Way has set up the Maui United Way Fire Disaster Relief Fund with 100% of donations staying on Maui to provide immediate assistance and recovery. So far, they have raised $3.3 million through online donations alone. Maui United Way Fire Disaster Relief Fund grants are already reaching people in need including: – Meeting the immediate emergency needs of disaster survivors (providing food, shelter, and crisis counseling) – Providing transportation to essential services like doctors' appointments and grocery shopping for those who have lost their vehicles – Helping families replace documents lost during the fires such as IDs that are necessary for obtaining housing, medical treatment, and more – Restocking local shelters with provisions for displaced families With at least 106 confirmed dead, 1,300 still missing, and damages in the billions of dollars, we know it is a long road ahead for the Maui community. On August 8, 2023, a series of wildfires erupted on the Hawaiian island of Maui. Fueled by powerful winds from Hurricane Dora, the fires rapidly advanced, engulfing much of the historic town of Lahaina and other parts of Maui. Currently, the death toll stands at 53, with dozens more unaccounted for. Over 271 structures, including homes, businesses, and cultural landmarks, have been damaged or completely destroyed. Firefighters are still battling the flames but are gradually gaining control. The devastation left in the wake of the Maui wildfires is profound. The loss of life, property, and heritage is deeply saddening, and the ramifications will linger for years. If you are considering assisting fire victims, please exercise caution when choosing a charity. While platforms like GoFundMe can be beneficial, ensuring the funds reach the intended recipients is essential. A reputable charity supported by both former President Obama and one I’ve donated to myself is the Hawaii Community Foundation's Maui Strong fund. https://lnkd.in/gQUZy6Gs Charity Navigator is also a reliable tool for assessing the credibility of various charitable organizations. Alternatively, the Maui United Way and the American Red Cross are established organizations you can consider. Even if you cannot donate, sharing information might prompt someone you know to help.
