The Emergency Medical Treatment & Labor Act (EMTALA) of 1986 ensured public access to emergency services regardless of ability to pay. It created a health care safety net that provides: - Acute unscheduled care (assessment and stabilization) - Access to care 24/7 - Transitions of care - Disaster response After 37 years, the sustainability of that care is in danger, and it affects us all – patients, emergency response systems, medical staff, researchers, residents, primary care and post-acute providers, and more. We must act to find solutions to ensure that EMTALA's benefits are available for generations to come.

This incident hits close to home here in Hawaii. Our condolences to the victim, their family and all of the great staff at the Hawaii State Hospital. A very sad and somber time for all of us in the healthcare industry here in paradise. A few days after this Hawaii incident, the New Hampshire State Hospital experienced a loss of life when a security officer working for the hospital was shot and killed while on duty by a gunman who entered the facility. As you can see, violence in healthcare knows no boundaries. For years, throughout our nation, healthcare security and safety experts have educated, planned and prepared for one of the greatest risks in healthcare; Violence. Violence against staff is an identified and highly recognized risk that must be addressed and mitigated with a variety of strategies. This risk is a permanent one, it is not going away. The violence that occurs daily in our healthcare settings are very consistent and continues to trend upward each year. From verbal threats to physicals assaults, healthcare settings are indeed dangerous, dynamic and unpredictable. A large obstacle deals with getting the administration and C-Suite to truly understand the impact of working in violent healthcare settings as concerns typically focus on great patient care, open and welcoming environments, patient satisfaction scores, keeping physicians happy and finances. How do you balance all of this and how can security and safety become more understood to be a top priority? It is still a challenge to convince the powers to be that security and safety should be a top focus. If your staff and employees are not working in a safe environment, great patient care cannot be provided! PEACE AND SAFETY THROUGH KNOWLEDGE AND PREPARATION

Are you seeking emergency room care in South Carolina? Did you know that patients in South Carolina's emergency rooms had to wait an average of over two hours last year? That's like watching a feature-length film before hearing your name called! The S.C. Hospital Association is constantly working to optimize ER wait times, with many hospitals now advertising their averages on their websites. But don't worry, we've got you covered with the current wait times for local emergency rooms: 1. Conway Medical Center: Initial exam in about 22 minutes and non-critical discharge in about two hours. 2. Grand Strand Medical Center – HCA: Wait times between three and four minutes! They prioritize patients based on their reason for visiting and the nature of their complaint. 3. McLeod Health: Wait times at their different facilities were not immediately available, but average delays of an hour were reported at the Loris location. Patients needing admission could wait up to nearly four hours. 4. Tidelands Health: Wait times of around 32 minutes before seeing a doctor at Waccamaw Community Hospital.
