💡 Here’s a really common conversation we have: - client “we’re looking for a management accountant - we want an up and comer, finalist or new qual, someone in a management accounts role now… FD of the future type” Here’s another really common conversation we have: - candidate “I’m nearly qualified and a management accountant now - if I leave it would be for a fully fledged business partnering role or the step to FC” 👉🏻 If you’re recruiting a Finance Director right now it’s reasonable to expect to see people already operating at FD level. If you’re recruiting further down the chain and you want to select for ambition then you likely need to consider candidates “stepping up” from an assistant MA level maybe… Or Asses whether you actually need an FD of the future or someone happy at the MA level with less career aspiration perhaps?? [finally back on the 5ks this week after tearing my calf in half in Jan 🤦♂️]

This week I will have spent 11 years recruiting accounting and corporate finance professionals in Perth. I have been racking my brain for a piece of advice that rings true for everyone but that's probably fairly hard to do considering everyone's circumstances are so unique. I have landed on one piece of advice from a few years back that has probably been the most relevant when talking with candidates... > Take 3 factors - Industry experience, your primary skill set, size of companies you have worked for > When moving jobs you can typically change 1 of these factors and still have a decent chance at getting the role > It's not impossible to change 2 or even all 3 factors but it likely takes a candidate short job market, knowing someone on the inside of the new company or maybe a bit of luck It's certainly not groundbreaking advice but from the experience I've had it's fairly reliable. For example most hiring managers iv recruited for over the years are happy to consider someone without relevant industry experience so long as the candidate is an expert at the job they've applied for and they've worked in a similar size company with similar accounting issues OR You can move from financial accountant to FP&A so long as you know the industry inside out and have worked for similar size companies and so on...
