We're proud to highlight the contributions of our colleagues Louis Bont and Natalie Mazur, who are featured in the latest The Lancet—Lancet Respiratory Medicine series on Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). Natalie's article dives into the critical global health challenge posed by RSV, exploring its impact on children and adults alike. Furthermore, the series features a profile of both written by Tony Kirby. 💡 Key-Take Away: RSV is now a vaccine-preventable disease but one of the major obstacles is to guarantee vaccine access in LMICs where the mortality burden is highest! The series was officially launched during the ERS Congress in Vienna (Sept 7-11), where Natalie and Joanne Wildenbeest (UMC Utrecht, Wilhelmina Kinderziekenhuis (Het WKZ)) spoke during a special journal session focused on RSV-related acute respiratory infections. 📚 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬 𝐅𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡 '𝘌𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘛𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 𝘖𝘧 𝘍𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘵 𝘐𝘯 𝘈𝘯 𝘈𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘚𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨; 𝘈 𝘛𝘢𝘯𝘻𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘺𝘴𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘢' In this retrospective study, co-authored by Global Health fellows Naiz Majani, Martijn Slieker, and Diederick (Rick) E. Grobbee, MD, PhD, FESC, the surgical outcomes of children undergoing repair for Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) at the JAKAYA KIKWETE CARDIAC INSTITUTE (JKCI) in Tanzania were examined. This study highlights the challenges of late diagnosis and treatment, with most patients presenting beyond the optimal age for surgery, leading to higher risks and longer hospital stays. Despite these obstacles, the institute achieved a 5.9% mortality rate, lower than the average for resource-limited settings. The findings underscore the importance of early screening and timely intervention to improve outcomes for children with congenital heart disease in low- and middle-income countries. The study emphasizes the need for continued investment in pediatric cardiac care, early detection programs, and infrastructure development to save more lives in regions with limited access to specialized care. “We are the future, its time we start thinking about important topics related to Global Health” ✨ – model WHA delegation 2024 member from Suriname   In 3 weeks, a delegation of students from Utrecht University/Universitair Medisch Centrum Utrecht, Anton de Kom Universiteit van Suriname, Universiteit van Aruba and universiteit van Curacao will travel to Geneva to join the first edition of the model World Health Organization. This initiative is co-developed and lead by students: a big thank you to Lara Lynn Vooijs, Lara van Schaick and Cecilia B. for their energy and efforts to realize this   Earlier this week was the first session in which we welcomed the students who will be joining the delegation: Francine Pieternella, Jurstin Paesch, Joshua Karwofodi, Tayzir Sambo, Drs. Shivan Kalika, Ryvann Soerohardjo, Ali Reza Lotfy, Beyza Köktaș, Marta Alina Monikowska, Thorsten van Dijk, Nienke Ostermann, Cecilia B. and Lara van Schaick. They were joined by UMC Utrecht Global Health staff members George Downward, Camilla Alay Llamas and Joyce Browne who are involved in the organization of this trip.   The session started with a presentation by Lara about her experiences as a WHO Youth Delegate (IFMSA-NL/Ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport) and the workings of the WHO. Vandaag te lezen voor al onze UMC Utrecht collega's: het verhaal van Najibullah, die als KNO-arts in Afghanistan werkte voor hij naar Nederland moest vluchten. Hij is een van de deelnemers van het nieuwe programma voor nieuwkomers: ‘Oriëntatie in de Nederlandse Gezondheidszorg’. Op dit moment loopt de eerste editie. Vandaag start de inschrijving voor de nieuwe ronde van het Nieuwkomersprogramma. Inschrijving is mogelijk tussen 1 oktober en 27 oktober 2024. De start van dit programma is in januari 2025. Het programma bestaat uit twee delen. Het eerste deel zijn taallessen om het niveau van de deelnemers van B1 naar B2 te krijgen. Het tweede deel bestaat uit kennismaking met de Nederlandse gezondheidszorg. Het derde deel bestaat uit het doorstromen naar een baan in de Nederlandse gezondheidszorg.* Dit programma is opgezet vanuit een samenwerking tussen het UMC Utrecht, Diakonessenhuis en het St. Antonius Hospital Nieuwegein, The Netherlands.
