We are excited to share the highlights from the Global Health EDCTP3 Joint Undertaking Governing Board meeting. During the event, we presented the key findings from the first interim evaluation, which touch upon: 🔘 Relevance and Coherence: The objectives of Global Health EDCTP3 JU are highly relevant to emerging infectious disease threats, AMR, and climate-related health challenges, with partnerships like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation enhancing coherence. 🔘 Efficiency and Effectiveness: The JU shows cost-effectiveness, progress in gender integration, and robust monitoring. 🔘 EU Added Value and International Positioning: Enhanced inter-African and Africa-Europe cooperation, capacity building, and global visibility. 🔘 Transparency and Openness: Measures to boost stakeholder participation and strategic collaborations in Africa. We are proud to support Global Health EDCTP3 JU’s mission to foster global collaborative research and capacity strengthening, aimed at accelerating the development, evaluation, and implementation of interventions for infectious diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. 🎉 This month was #SNIPAFRICA 1-year anniversary! 🤔 What is the project about? ℹ️ Global Health EDCTP3 funded project, SPIN-AFRICA, is a 5-year project (2023-2028) that aims to reduce mortality among neonates in hospital with #sepsis, in #Africa. 🔬 How? 🔹 To better treat neonatal sepsis in the face of rising #antimicrobial resistance (#AMR), the project seeks to develop a #clinical #research platform for the implementation of adaptive trials in sub-Saharan Africa. 🔹 SNIP-AFRICA will conduct a trial that will identify optimal treatment regimens and doses for difficult-to-treat infections and sepsis. 🌍 Africa carries a disproportionately high burden of mortality and morbidity related to #AMR with the highest attributable and associated mortality rates experienced by newborns in most African countries: https://lnkd.in/g9zARpjg #SNIPAFRICA is a Global Health EDCTP3-funded project to build a severe neonatal infection platform to address the problem of #neonatalsepsis in Africa. Our pillars are: 🏗 An adapatable infrastructure to support platform trials in severe neonatal infection. Centre for Neonatal and Paediatric Infection (CNPI), MRC Clinical Trials Unit at UCL,Penta Foundation - Child Health Research. 👩🔬 Research activities to identify best ways to use antibiotics to treat newborn babies, including pharmacokinetic studies and the #NeoSep1 trial. Stellenbosch University, Global Antibiotic R&D Partnership (GARDP), MRC Clinical Trials Unit at UCL, Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). 👨👨👧👧 Stakeholder engagement to enable successful implementation of adaptive platform trials. So far, we have 👉 Set up a clinical and microbiological surveillance approach to understand the epidemiology of severe neonatal infection in Africa. 👉 Drafted templates to support dose identification and optimisation focusing on neonatal antimicrobial pharmacokinetics. 👉 Finalised the NeoSep1 protocol using a combined PRACTical and SMART design. 👉 Identified training needs and pathways towards South-South capacity building and strengthening. 👉 Moved forward with engagement activities addressing a range of stakeholders.
