The Tulsa Birth Equity Initiative Community Doula Program has not only halved preterm birth rates for Black mothers, but has also reduced instances of low birth weight among families in the program.
Since its creation in 2019, TBEI has supported 279 births and trained 140 community-based doulas with a commitment to equipping families in Tulsa to have healthy deliveries. Reducing maternal health disparities begins with restoring dignity and ensuring families are seen, heard and supported from early pregnancy to the months immediately following childbirth.

A recent survey by YouGov revealed that 50% of adults in the UK said that they or someone they know had experienced pregnancy or baby loss.
And yet, there is still so much to be done to raise awareness, improve maternity safety and provide proper care and support to bereaved families.
This is why it is so important that we continue to raise these issues during Baby Loss Awareness Week and beyond.

This is an incredible statistic, which makes it is all the more important that weeks like Baby Loss Awareness Week should happen and help make people aware of the support out there for families. It’s also a statistic that should also ensure that baby loss is much higher up the healthcare and political agenda than it currently is. #BLAW2023

A post-partum doula can come in and do light housework and errands and tend to older children while the mother is supported and secure in getting to know her baby and its needs.
Another benefit of a postpartum doula is that she will help with breastfeeding and provide guidance with other maternal postpartum needs, in addition to household tasks.
A postpartum doula is a gift and can have long-lasting benefits for the whole family because when the mom is supported, everyone else can flourish too.
Another reason that doulas are so valuable is they are looking after the mother at a time when the attention has shifted to the baby. Mothers start to feel invisible after being lauded throughout the pregnancy. Fathers/ partners can use the help too, as they adapt to the new situation, and benefit from learning about baby-care from the doula. Doulas can screen visitors and calls for you, so you don't get overly fatigued.
The benefits go on and on. Have you had the blessing of a post-partum doula? How did they help you?

I'm excited to announce Healthline Media 's collaboration with Ancient Song (founded and led by Chanel Porchia-Albert) through a $100,000 Maternal Health Grant.
In a new Op-Ed (https://lnkd.in/ej6Sysbt), I discuss Healthline's 2023 commitment to advancing #maternalhealth equity, and I reflect on my own personal journey as a Black mother who has had to navigate two pregnancy and postpartum journeys amidst an ongoing preventable U.S. maternal health crisis.
During Healthline's year long campaign we have:
1) Engaged with maternal health experts through our internal health equity learning series.
2) Highlighted the important work of change-makers like Charles Johnson of 4Kira4Moms, Inc.
3)Donated on behalf of our team members to maternal health organizations doing important work in communities across the country.
4)Led consumer insights research to determine the top needs of pregnant people and new parents to further guide inclusive content development.
Excellence in maternal healthcare should be the standard for all. To achieve this goal, there are several non-negotiable solutions championed by #birthequity and #reproductivejustice advocates, healthcare professionals, researchers, and the perinatal health workforce. They include:
1) Acknowledging and remedying the effects of systemic racism on inequitable maternal health outcomes.
2) Centering the experiences of Black, Latinx, and Indigenous pregnant people and new parents.
3) Advocating for the practice of respectful and holistic maternity care.
4) Healthcare models that include clinical providers, perinatal health workers, community-based health organizations, and social support services working collaboratively to create safety nets for pregnant people and new parents.
The state of #maternalhealth is widely accepted as an indicator of the overall quality of a national health system. We must continue to do better, invest resources in the solutions that are working, and focus efforts on the most negatively impacted to create upstream positive benefits for all.
Did you know that as many as two out of five new and expecting moms felt they were not being listened to by their maternal care team at some point in their pregnancy or postpartum journey?
We partnered with Ancient Song provide $100,000 to expand their postpartum doula trainings and care services for 30 pregnant people and new families. Ancient Song is a national birth justice organization working to eliminate maternal and infant mortality and morbidity among low-income Black and Latinx people.
At Healthline Media, we are dedicated to improving access to care for all birthing people, especially given that African American, American Indian and Alaskan Native, and Latinx Women are more likely to experience negative outcomes before, during and after pregnancy.

Let’s talk balls! 🔴🔴🔴🔴Do you have an exercise ball?
No Precious, why would I need that?
Using an exercise ball during pregnancy can help improve posture, strengthen core muscles, and provide a comfortable way to stay active. It may also aid in relieving back pain and promoting flexibility, making it a beneficial tool for expectant mothers.
During labor and delivery, an exercise ball can assist in easing discomfort, promoting optimal fetal positioning, and encouraging pelvic mobility. Sitting or gently bouncing on the ball may help relieve pressure and facilitate the progression of labor. Additionally, using the ball for certain positions can enhance comfort and provide support during the birthing process.

The purpose of childbirth education is to make a mother excited about her baby's birth, as much as there is fear in it. The fear revolves around how the delivery happens, how much pain is involved, and whether the baby will be harmed in any way. For new mothers, all of this can be stressful. However, if you are mentally and physically prepared beforehand, you can enjoy the entire journey from pregnancy to delivery. Childbirth education classes cover all preparations related to the baby's birth, providing information not only to parents but also to family members so that every fear related to delivery can be eliminated. Dr. Shweta Upadhyay explains the goals and benefits of childbirth education.
