🔥 We made it! 🔥 Such a fun evening talking about the challenges AND solutions of decarbonising heat in the built environment.
Heating the built environment accounts for ~20% of total UK carbon emissions. Only about 5% of homes have low-carbon heating, while 85% are heated by natural gas. We have two solutions to deploy as fast as possible: heat pumps and low-carbon heat networks.
Thanks to our incredible speakers, we were able to unpack the key enablers for these solutions.
1️⃣ Aimee Clark shared the importance of bringing down the heat pumps upfront costs for consumers as well as changing the narrative: heat pumps work, they are 3 times more efficient than a gas boiler, and have great benefits for indoor air quality.
2️⃣ Lyall Archer shared that currently 2% of heat is delivered by heat networks and we should get to 20% in 2050! Private investment is key for deployment and future heat networks should make the most of waste heat sources in high-demand areas in order to reduce the dimension of new infrastructure (pipes/tech) to put in place.
3️⃣ Charlotte Owen shed light on electrified heat's main challenge: electricity is still too expensive! It's around 4 times more expensive than gas and a recent study showed that 25% of heat pump energy bills are taxes whereas for gas heating it's only 8% (!). On heat networks, Charlotte shared that the upcoming regulation is going to boost investment in the sector, especially Heat Network Zoning which is going to mandate buildings to connect.
4️⃣ Emily White shared how the Bristol City Leap, a first-of-a-kind partnership between the private and public sectors to accelerate decarbonisation in the city, could be replicated by other local authorities in the country. She also leads the Heat Pump Ready Programme for Bristol, a nationally-funded program that aims to offer residents a solid supply chain of services (home surveying, retrofit experts, heat pump installers) to make their homes ready to install a heat pump (Which Buro Happold is the technical partner for).
Thanks guys for making my first experience as a moderator (😱) go smoothly and easily, I'm already looking forward to the next!
Thanks Octopus Energy for once again hosting us in your incredible space, I'm sure many people were spotted in the tube with the Octopus plush on Monday night!🐙👀
❤️ And last but not least thanks to the YPN team who delivered another brilliant event. Putting together events like this is a massive amount of volunteering work that lasts months! 🔥Let’s turn up the low-carbon heat!🔥
What an evening! Incredibly grateful to our inspiring speakers Emily White Charlotte Owen Aimee Clark Lyall Archer for joining us and sharing some great insights.
Some of the key points we covered:
⚡️ Electrified heat affordability
💸 Role of private investment for deployment of heat networks
🏛️ How a local authority can foster low-carbon heat
🔊 Importance of a positive narrative for both heat pumps and heat networks
Thank you so much the engaged audience and Octopus Energy and Centre for Net Zero (Octopus Energy Group) for hosting in your amazing space!
