Just wrapped up a course on Digital Sustainability for Biodiversity Action this Sunday! Spent the day exploring how digital transformation can tackle human-induced climate change. This course gave me a perspective on using digital tools for climate action, from reducing emissions to adapting to new environmental challenges. Why make payments to restoring blue carbon ecosystems? Blue Carbon is a nature-based carbon dioxide removal method which, as well as absorbing carbon, can enhance biodiversity, ecosystem services, employment and local livelihoods. Restoring and protecting coastal ecosystems is therefore a climate solution which works to both mitigate climate change and contributes to climate adaptation and sustainable development. After working closely with many multi-national corporations at The Biodiversity Consultancy Ltd, I understand that the nature agenda feels a bit scary 👻 Everyone is just getting their head around #climate and #NetZero commitments and now nature-related disclosures & #NaturePositive commitments are here, and they seems even bigger & more complicated 😱 Well, that's in part because nature is indeed bigger than climate. We can’t meet climate goals without addressing degradation of nature 🌳 . In fact, nature protection & restoration is the most cost-effective solution to the climate crisis. And vice versa. Climate change is a pressure on nature, that needs to be addressed 🌡 . Which is why companies should leverage nature to meet their climate targets AND - importantly, the exact same concepts and logic for developing and implementing climate targets can also be practically applied to other material pressures on nature. For example: 🚫 1) SBTi advises rapid, deep cuts to direct and value chain CO2 emissions -> similarly, companies can set targets to avoid and reduce other new & on-going pressures on nature (like land use and pollution, as per #SBTs). ⚖ 2) SBTi states that carbon removal and storage will be needed to counterbalance residual emissions that cannot be eliminated -> similarly, companies can invest in within value chain restoration and regeneration of land, freshwater and oceans. 🌎 3) SBTi encourages additional Beyond Value Chain Mitigation (BVCM) to reduce and remove emissions outside of their value chains in addition to near- and long-term science-based targets -> similarly, companies can make proportional positive contributions to nature recovery projects beyond their value chains as well.
