❄ Snow days make accessibility a timely topic. ❄ Today, our university is closed for inclement weather. I worked to communicate effectively and via different mediums to respect accessibility. 1️⃣ No matter the season, I post all of my course materials on our Learning Management System. So from day 1, students have access to all homeworks, lesson plans, in-class assignments, rubrics, and helpful links. 2️⃣ For today, I made a short screen recording explaining the material, reminding students where to find more help, and how to turn in assignments. The video is 20 minutes, any longer would likely result in student zoning out. Students can pause, rewind, and increase the speed of the video to meet their learning needs. 3️⃣ To aid those who have spotty internet and may not be able to view a video, I wrote an outline of what was discussed in the video. The written explanation included screenshots from the video. It was posted on the LMS and emailed. 4️⃣ Deadlines were changed to allow students an extra day to get to reliable internet or when they could secure childcare. What I would like to do in the future to make materials even more accessible: 1. Find an effective, free service that will provide closed captions for my videos. Ideally, I could just run my .mov through a program. It would then automatically overlay the captions, recognizing both Spanish and English. 2. Check materials for readability. These goals are lofty, but as educational technologies improve, I am betting I can find tools soon. Comment below if you have any suggestions!

Accessibility means different things to different people. Ultimately, #accessibility is about removing barriers that prevent everyone from being included. Because people with disabilities face different barriers, it can be difficult to know where to begin. But as Chief Accessibility Officer (CAO), Stephanie Cadieux, has often said: ‘’Just get started. Don’t wait.’’ If we don’t get started, the culture will never change. So in the spirit of encouraging everyone to get started, and to keep going, we launched "Talking Accessibility," a series of stories and conversations about what accessibility really means and why it matters. In this series, we’ve met people with lived experience and heard from organisations who are doing the work. Our latest entry, “Reflections,” captures what we’ve learned and shared so far and offers commentary from the CAO and our office’s team of collaborators.
