“The artificial kidney is all about one word: ‘hope.’” The implantable bioartificial kidney provides kidney patients an alternative solution to the long waits for kidney transplants and the draining sessions of dialysis. Lizzie Porter, a courageous kidney disease survivor and donor to The Kidney Project, was fortunate enough to receive a transplant from her cousin, but the idea of an artificial kidney is comforting to her in case her transplanted kidney should ever fail. With your support and the commitment of families like the Porters, we can transform this aspiration into reality. Your contribution to The Kidney Project will bring us one step closer to making the artificial kidney accessible to patients who desperately need it. Walter Tauro, the Guinness World Records holder for the world’s oldest kidney transplant recipient, is the epitome of resilience and courage. From battling kidney disease to becoming the world's oldest kidney transplant recipient at 88, his story is one of persistence, determination and triumph. As we celebrate Be a Donor Month, let Walter's resilience and fighting spirit inspire us all to make a difference—one donor, one recipient, and a gift of life. To discover more about the extended criteria for kidney donors, Ontario, which is a classification system used for kidney transplants, designed to expand the pool of available kidneys for transplantation. It reduces the waiting time for eligible older patients to receive a kidney transplant making it possible for more patients to receive transplants later in life. Let's break down the myths of age and health concerning organ donation! #FYIFriday Myth: "I'm too old or unhealthy to be an organ donor." Fact: Age and health conditions don't necessarily disqualify you from being an organ donor. Medical professionals carefully evaluate each potential donor's organs and determine their suitability for transplantation based on medical criteria. Your decision to register as an organ donor could save lives, regardless of age or health status.

Finally, there is now a little bit of information around normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) in the Donation and Transplant System Explorer. NRP is not explicitly captured as a data element, so we inferred NRP if the time from declaration of death to cross clamp is longer than 30 minutes for DCD donors. Below is the trend of DCD heart transplants stratified by whether the transplant was done with or without NRP. https://lnkd.in/gBq95htt

C-Suite Strategy & Innovation Executive Experienced in Transforming Medical Device Prototype to FDA Breakthrough Device Designation
This is very promising! But just imagine what the impact will be when we have easy-to-use, simple machine perfusion devices that are cost-accessible to ALL transplant centers not only in the US but to the rest of the World. #innovation #healthcareaccess #medtech #hearttransplant #trueinnovation #organperfusion #movingforward #healthequity

The OPTN's Expeditious Task Force has established their goal of 60,000 successful, lifesaving deceased donor transplants annually by the end of 2026. From July 2022 to July 2023, annual deceased donor transplants grew by about 4,000 (~34,500 to ~38,500). However from July 2023 to July 2024, annual deceased donor transplant growth slowed to only about 2,000 (~38,500 to ~40,500). If deceased donor transplants continue to grow by only 2,000 per year, we would reach about 45,500 by the end of 2026, well shy of the Expeditious Task Force's goal of 60,000 (and this is assuming all of these transplants are "successful" and "lifesaving"). 60,000 successful, lifesaving deceased donor transplants by the end of 2026 is, indeed, a bold goal, but the recent slowing of deceased donor transplant growth doesn't bode well for its success. Fortunately we are still 2.5 years from the end of 2026, but if the United States Transplant system is going to achieve this goal, a lot needs to change between now and then. https://lnkd.in/dFSjkBeX #OPTN #Expeditious #TaskForce #Transplant

Stan Larkin, a 25-year-old Michigan resident, lived 555 days without a human heart transplant. He carried a gray backpack with a power source for an artificial heart pumping in his chest. In November 2014, Larkin’s real heart was removed from his body and replaced with a device that allowed him to stay home instead of in a hospital while waiting for a transplant. Human organs grown in pigs may help transplant patients, and the total artificial heart finally arrived in May 2016. Larkin recovered from his procedure at the University of Michigan Frankel Cardiovascular Center and returned home the following week. The artificial heart is created by Syncardia. Heart transplants save lives but finding a suitable donor match is a significant challenge. Many patients face long waits due to stringent matching criteria and limited availability of organs. Despite a high success rate of around 85-90% for one-year survival post-transplant, the journey to recovery is tough. Additionally, the dark side of organ trafficking remains a global scourge, exploiting the desperation of many. It's imperative to raise awareness about the importance of ethical organ donation and robust legal frameworks to combat this issue. #TATHOTS

I can't stress enough how crucial organ donation is in saving lives. Every donor has the power to offer hope, healing, and a second chance at life to those in need. The National Health Authority (NHA) and our esteemed union health ministry are at the forefront of this transformative project. This digital registry signifies more than just technological advancement—it represents a paradigm shift in how we approach organ donation nationwide. By streamlining processes and enhancing transparency within the National Organ Tissue Transplantation Organisation (NOTTO), there’s a hope of ensuring a more efficient and equitable system for all. With this digital registry, we can say goodbye to unnecessary intermediaries, paving the way for direct and transparent organ donation processes. #OrganDonation #TransparencyInHealthcare #NOTTO #NHA #DigitalRegister
