Pat's journey started in 1998 when he was diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis. Living with declining lung function brought many limitations and the need for supportive oxygen, but Pat defied the odds for 10 years before needing a life-saving transplant. In May of 2009, Pat received a lung transplant and has been so grateful for the many years he has been given thanks to the gift of organ donation. Under the care of his medical team and the support of his family and friends, Pat has been able to celebrate many milestones as he hit the 15th anniversary of his lung transplant this year at the age of 83! He has celebrated 60 years of marriage, is a father of 3 daughters, grandfather to 11, and a friend to many others. Pat was the driving force behind the establishment of a support group for patients and is a tireless advocate for organ donation. He continues to be a testament to the life-saving gift of organ donation and the impact it can have on the lives of so many. #SayYestoDonation #GiftofHope #DonateLife Learn more about organ, eye and tissue donation at giftofhope.org

How NF2 affects me We want you to meet the real life people affected by NF2. You can donate here: https://bit.ly/NF2BIGGIVE We are each affected differently but we are linked together by our rare disorder NF2 related Schwannomatosis (NF2) Today we meet Liene who was diagnosed with NF2 at 19 years old and her tumours were big at that time leading to increased pressure in her brain. "I was advised to get Avastin treatments. I was happy to get that help, because first when I was introduced to Avastin, they were a little bit reluctant because of the side effects on a young person like me. But this would mean that I’d get some more years without surgeries ... I moved to Norway, and was asked if I have plans of starting a family some day, and that was the first time they warned me about getting pregnant while on avastin because it can cause severe damage to the baby" Whilst Avastin can help stabilize tumours it comes with a whole host of side effects and for females this includes Ovarian failure - sadly reducing changes of starting a family naturally. We need better treatments so that those who want a family can do so without fear of treatments affecting their fertility while dealing with NF2 issues. NF2 is a life long genetic condition There is no beginning, middle or ending to any of our stories, no remission or breaks. Treatment options are surgery/radiosurgery/chemotherapy which often results in loss of function of the involved nerve. We don't get to "ring the bell" at the end of treatment, its more a case of building our resilience up and moving forwards. NF2 IS FOR LIFE Reading real life stories about how NF2 affects people helps others to understand why we need better treatments. Please help us to make that happen by donating to research, sharing your story & raising awareness. The Big Give campaign is live and DOUBLING your donation during the Christmas Challenge, please give whatever you can afford to accelerate our research. One donation, Twice the impact!! You can donate here: https://bit.ly/NF2BIGGIVE TOGETHER WE CAN #ENDNF2

Read more in the infographic below. -> So much more needs to be done to investigate and treat the reasons for #ckd. Kidney Research UK is helping to do just that, more here https://lnkd.in/eZ3zaDcu -> Be high blood pressure aware and do not ignore the symptoms. The kidneys play a huge role and blood pressure changes can be a first indication of issues. -> The earlier it is caught, the better the chances for a transplant and to lengthen the kidney function.

Please help us celebrate Warren! He has been donating with Versiti Blood Center of Illinois since 1987, giving platelets every two weeks!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 He just completed his 275th platelet donation! Platelet donation is a process where a person donates platelets, which are small cell fragments in the blood that help with clotting. Platelets are crucial for individuals who have low platelet counts due to various medical conditions, such as cancer, blood disorders, or after undergoing certain treatments like chemotherapy. Platelet donations help replenish and support these patients' platelet levels, aiding in their recovery and treatment. Platelets have a relatively short shelf life compared to other blood components. On average, platelets can be stored at room temperature for 5 to 7 days. This limited lifespan is primarily due to the risk of bacterial contamination during storage. Therefore, it is crucial to have a constant supply of fresh platelet donations to meet the needs of patients who require platelet transfusions. #platelets #giveblood #versiti #community #savelives

🩸Safe blood saves lives. Why it is important to donate blood? 🔴One blood donation can save up to three lives. 🔴 If you donate blood then it can use it when we need it in parts—whether you need the red cells, the plasma, or the platelets—has been a huge medical advance. 🔴 If you donate blood, it will be given to someone who needs it through a transfusion. Transfusions help replace blood that is lost due to surgery or injury. Transfusions also help people with disorders that prevent them from making blood correctly. 🔴 Blood is needed by women with complications during pregnancy and childbirth, children with severe anaemia, often resulting from malaria or malnutrition, accident victims and surgical and cancer patients. 🔴 Maintain Cardiovascular health 🔴 May reduce the risk of developing cancer 🔴 Maintains healthy liver So our college ITM Group of Institutions organized blood donation camp. I am glad to be a part of that camp. I donate a bottle of blood which can save 3 lives. So it was a very happy moment for me. I request you that if you get a chance to donate blood in the future, please do so. It can save one's life. #BloodDonation #lives #Social #donate #DYPatil #Hospitals #Bloodbank #kharghar #college #camp #health

DYK? August is National Minority Donor Awareness Month (NMDAM). We are celebrating and honoring one voice, one vision to save and heal lives! Join us this month to raise awareness, educate and share inspiring stories as we celebrate life and legacy. NMDAM is vital because more than 60% of patients on the national transplant waiting list come from multicultural communities. Why is this? The need for organ transplants is more pronounced in minority communities because of higher rates of diabetes, hypertension and heart disease which can lead to organ failure. Kidney failure is the most common. Although cross-cultural and interracial organ transplants happen every day, the chances for a successful and long-lasting transplant are greater when the donor and recipient share the same ethnic background. Gift of Life Michigan, along with our peers across the country, is committed to bridging this gap and advocating for equality in donation and transplantation. We will post resources and stories all month, and we ask you to share them to encourage people to sign up as donors and give the gift of life to those in need. Learn more about National Minority Donor Awareness Month at https://lnkd.in/g8TMuRr2 and https://lnkd.in/gTXmP4RZ. 💙💚 #DonateLife #NMDAM2023
