Estonia ranked 16th among the 132 economies featured in the Global Innovation Index 2023! The report highlights e-governance, imports of information and communication services and the value of unicorns in relation to GDP as strengths for Estonia. In these areas, Estonia maintains an absolute leadership position, being ranked first among all countries. As innovation top performers, the universities mentioned are the University of Tartu, TalTech, and Tallinn University. The most successful unicorns are Bolt and Veriff. A weakness highlighted in the report for Estonia is the income generated from transactions involving intellectual property. "It is in the interest of the Estonian economy that all stakeholders come together and support entrepreneurs. Unprotected intellectual property is undoubtedly a significant risk for entrepreneurs and the country's economy and innovation," says Margus Viher, director general of the Estonian Patent Office. Global Innovation Index 2023? 🇨🇳🚀 China’s only 12th on this list, but leading when it comes to science and technology hubs, ranked by their share of international patent applications and scientific publications. 👇 So, how did everyone else do? 🚀 For the 13th year in a row, Switzerland is the most innovative economy in the world, according to WIPO. It’s followed by Sweden, the US, the UK and Singapore. 🚀 WIPO’s Global Innovation Index (GII) takes the pulse of global innovation trends against the background of an economic environment of each individual country. 🚀 So, interestingly, they say, China’s actually leading in innovation “in the upper middle-income group with performance above expectation for the level of country’s development”. 🚀 When it comes to science and technology clusters, for the first time in 2023, China tops the list of countries with the highest number of clusters among the top 100, having 24 in total. The US follows with 21 clusters, then Germany with 9. So, what is China doing to boost innovation efforts in 2024? ✅ China unveiled a strategy early last month to commercialise its innovations, aiming to compete globally with international tech products. This includes the establishment of five advanced pilot-scale production facilities to enhance its global manufacturing leadership. ✅ The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will also boost the supply of essential pilot test products. Items like precision instruments, testing equipment, and design software will become more available. ✅ Chinese manufacturers are urged to adopt AI, machine learning, and digital tech in pilot testing. They are also encouraged to share data with suppliers to speed up R&D and reduce costs. ✅ Currently, only 37% of China's large industrial companies are involved in research and testing. China's R&D spending is 2.6% of its GDP, trailing the 3.5% in the US and 5% in South Korea, highlighting a need for increased investment. What’s your take? 🤓👇 How do you see innovation evolving in China 2024?
