📃Scientific paper: Observable Gravitational Waves from Hyperkination in Palatini Gravity and Beyond Abstract: We consider cosmology with an inflaton scalar field with an additional quartic kinetic term. Such a theory can be motivated by Palatini $R R^2$ modified gravity. Assuming a runaway inflaton potential, we take the Universe to become dominated by the kinetic energy density of the scalar field after inflation. Initially, the leading kinetic term is quartic and we call the corresponding period hyperkination. Subsequently, the usual quadratic kinetic term takes over and we have regular kination, until reheating. We study, both analytically and numerically, the spectrum of primordial gravitational waves generated during inflation and re-entering the horizon during the subsequent eras. We demonstrate that the spectrum is flat for modes re-entering during radiation domination and hyperkination and linear in frequency for modes re-entering during kination: kinetic domination boosts the spectrum, but hyperkination truncates its peak. As a result, the effects of the kinetic period can be extended to observable frequencies without generating excessive gravitational waves, which could otherwise destabilise the process of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. We show that there is ample parameter space for the primordial gravitational waves to be observable in the near future. If observed, the amplitude and `knee' of the spectrum will provide valuable insights into the background theory. ;Comment: 40 pages, 8 figures Discover the rest of the scientific article on es/iode ➡️https://etcse.fr/UMLV

📃Scientific paper: f\(R\) Gravity in an Ellipsoidal Universe Abstract: We propose a new model of cosmology based on an anisotropic background and a specific $f\(R\)$ theory of gravity. It is shown that field equations of $f\(R\)$ gravity in a Bianchi type I background give rise to a modified Friedmann equation. This model contains two important parameters: $\gamma$ and $\delta$. We, thus, simply call our model $\gamma\delta$CDM. It is distinguished in two important aspects from the $\Lambda$CDM model: firstly, the contribution of different energy densities to the Hubble parameter are weighted with different weights, and then, dependence of energy densities to redshift is modified as well. This unorthodox relation of energy content to Hubble parameter brings forth a new way of interpreting the cosmological history. This solution does not allow the existence of a cosmological constant component, however, a dark energy contribution with dependence on redshift is possible. We tested observational relevance of the new solution by best fitting to different data sets. We found that our model could accommodate the idea of cosmological coupling of black holes. ;Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. v2: Prior choices are explained. A study recently published by researchers from Harvard University, called "Lomas, Tim. (2024). The cryptoterrestrial hypothesis: A case for scientific openness to a concealed earthly explanation for Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena. Philosophy and Cosmology. 33." The paper makes a compelling case for considering the cryptoterrestrial hypothesis (CTH) as a potential explanation for the phenomenon of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP). While acknowledging that the CTH may rank lower than other hypotheses like the extraterrestrial explanation, the authors argue that it should not be dismissed entirely given the extraordinary nature of UAP observations. The authors present four distinct variants of the CTH, each with its own nuances and implications. These range from remnants of advanced ancient human civilizations to non-human terrestrial species that evolved independently, as well as the possibility of extraterrestrial or extratempestrial beings that have concealed their presence on Earth, and even the idea of entities that seem to operate in ways that could be described as "magical" or "supernatural" from our current scientific perspective. While acknowledging the far-fetched nature of these hypotheses, the authors contend that the strangeness of some UAP observations may necessitate considering unconventional explanations. They highlight the limitations of relying solely on anthropocentric assumptions and the need for an open-minded approach that incorporates perspectives from various disciplines, including social sciences.

📃Scientific paper: Uniform probability in cosmology Abstract: Problems with uniform probabilities on an infinite support show up in contemporary cosmology. This paper focuses on the context of inflation theory, where it complicates the assignment of a probability measure over pocket universes. The measure problem in cosmology, whereby it seems impossible to pick out a uniquely well-motivated measure, is associated with a paradox that occurs in standard probability theory and crucially involves uniformity on an infinite sample space. This problem has been discussed by physicists, albeit without reference to earlier work on this topic. The aim of this article is both to introduce philosophers of probability to these recent discussions in cosmology and to familiarize physicists and philosophers working on cosmology with relevant foundational work by Kolmogorov, de Finetti, Jaynes, and other probabilists. As such, the main goal is not to solve the measure problem, but to clarify the exact origin of some of the current obstacles. The analysis of the assumptions going into the paradox indicates that there exist multiple ways of dealing consistently with uniform probabilities on infinite sample spaces. Taking a pluralist stance towards the mathematical methods used in cosmology shows there is some room for progress with assigning probabilities in cosmological theories. ;Comment: 16 pages; accepted for publication in Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Discover the rest of the scientific article on es/iode ➡️https://etcse.fr/eIUSg

The German magazine "Physik in unserer Zeit" invited me to write about my research on dwarf galaxies and cosmology. The article is now available as a pre-publication online version, and it is open access. It should appear in print in early 2024. The title is "Fordern galaktische Zwerge die Kosmologie heraus?" ("Do galactic dwarfs challenge cosmology?") https://lnkd.in/eAMG7u77 The text is targeted at a physics-educated but non-expert audience (the magazine is aimed at e.g. physicists, engineers, teachers). It was a fun experience to tailor this to be something in between a scientific review article and a popular science text. There are not many opportunities to write at that level, and I hope this will be helpful material. For example in cases where people approach me after an outreach talk and would like more information, but without having to dig through primary research papers or specialist reviews in English.

🌌 Magnetic fields in the Cosmos: dark matter could help us discover their origin. 🔭 Present on immense scales, magnetic fields are found everywhere in the Universe. However, their origin is still a matter of debate among scholars. ✨ A new theoretical study from SISSA, published in Physical Review Letters, explores the captivating notion that these magnetic fields may be primordial, originating near the Universe's birth. 🔎 In the study, researchers showed that if magnetic fields are indeed primordial then it could cause an increase in dark matter density perturbations on small scales. The ultimate effect of this process is the formation of mini-halos of dark matter, which, if detected, would hint towards a primordial nature of magnetic fields. Thus, in an apparent paradox, the invisible part of our Universe could be useful in resolving the nature of a component of the visible one. 📰 Check out our website for the full press release ➡ https://lnkd.in/dQjnRDw2 📷 Credit: Lucie Chrastecka
