Ban Ki-moon, Deputy Chair of The Elders, hails the importance of the upcoming Global Peace Summit convened by Ukraine and Switzerland and calls for greater international efforts to create conditions for a lasting peace in Ukraine. Read the comment in full: "I commend Ukraine and Switzerland for their efforts in convening leaders for the upcoming Global Peace Summit. The summit will be an important opportunity for states to discuss how progress can be made towards peace, and a reminder that lasting peace must be grounded in respect for international law and the UN Charter. Support for Ukraine must be matched by international efforts to help create the conditions for future peace negotiations between the parties to the conflict. These efforts must be complemented by dialogue on European regional security, alongside measures to prevent nuclear escalation and restore global strategic stability."

It is well researched; there are numerous better defence options! At a fraction of the cost, we could increase our defence capabilities while building manufacturing capacity and capability. Both major parties have failed us in this regard as both accept offensive weaponry is preferred as opposed to defensive capability. Our island nation should take into consideration its island neighbours and local allies, and specifically strategise around greater collaboration and relationship building in Oceania.
Should we allow our government to spend an eye-watering amount of tax payer money ($ 368 Billion) on nuclear powered submarines? According to defence experts there are much cheaper better options! #Aukus #AusPol #australia #defence #defense #submarines #QldPol https://lnkd.in/gvv9ky5i

The "new world order" has already arrived, and it's time for the US/NATO/EU to accept it. With Russia's impressive military strength and unlimited oil & gas reserves, and China's position as the top economic power in the world, it's clear that the balance of power has shifted. It's important to acknowledge that all three powers have nuclear weapons. The world will only become more peaceful if all powers come to terms with this new reality. Let's work towards a future where cooperation and diplomacy reign. #NewWorldOrder #GlobalPowerShift #PeaceThroughCooperation

Integrated deterrence is an important and evolving concept that helps articulate and highlight long standing principles of "general deterrence". As with any bright new shiny object in DC it will attract a bandwagon agendas. Those that seek to strengthen deterrence with new tools, perspectives and asymmetric points of leverage are exceptionally helpful. Unfortunately, with the helpful will come dangerous viewpoints and agendas that will promote "integrated deterrence" as an argument to reduce critical parts of the deterrence ecosystem. They will need to addressed, discredited and dismissed before they have the opportunity to do existential damaged. To quote a past CSAF - " go forth and educate the ignorant, and kill the stupid!" Nuclear weapons and reactors follow two different paths. Plans for harnessing the power of the atom split into two simultaneous paths — separate but linked by fundamental physics. One, led by Julius Oppenheimer, sought to create a weapon to swiftly end WWII. The other chased a different dream: using the immense potential energy stored in uranium to supply the nation with clean and reliable atomic power and to propel naval vessels for long stretches at sea without refuelling: https://lnkd.in/eaEkmKCj

Atomic energy, with its potential for peaceful and military applications, emerged internationally in the 1940s. In subsequent years, states incrementally established institutions and rules for managing this potential, such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), created in 1957. In 1968, the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) opened for signature, and it came into force in 1970.1 To motivate states to join the treaty, its principal authors, the United States and the Soviet Union, agreed that the obligations to stem weapons proliferation needed to be matched with obligations to facilitate access to peaceful applications of atomic energy and progress toward nuclear disarmament. These obligations were reflected in Articles I, II, and III of the treaty (nonproliferation), Article IV (peaceful nuclear cooperation), and Article VI (disarmament). By 1995, when the terms of the NPT called for an inter national conference of parties to decide whether, and under what conditions, to extend the treaty, 178 states had joined. At the 1995 Review and Extension Conference, the parties decided to extend the treaty indefinitely. Today, there are 191 NPT parties source: carnegieendowment.org click to read more: https://lnkd.in/dBp4BZ3P Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Wem' Afrika United Nations United Nations Peacekeeping #conflictmanagement #security #gender #internationalpeace #peacebuilding #nonproliferation

Nuclear Arms Control Is For Realists The world is on the brink of a new arms race. In 2023, Moscow suspended the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START), withdrew from the Conventional Armed Forces in Europe Treaty (CFE), de-ratified the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), linked the resumption of arms control with the United States to a change in U.S.-Russia...
