50 Gig speeds are now a reality thanks to Google Fiber Labs and Nokia's 50G PON technology!
We put Nokia’s tech to the test in our hometown market of City of Kansas City, MO. Read all about how it went and what it means for the future of Internet: https://lnkd.in/g4WzDq7F
Is 20 Gigs a bridge too far?
I vividly remember when Google Fiber pushed the U.S. broadband industry envelope by introducing 1 Gig broadband service as its standard -- even inviting cities to fight over who got it first. At the time, the ISP industry scoffed at the idea of the need for 1 Gig service to the home. It didn't take too much time for them all to fall in line though and 1 Gig service offers began popping up with regularity in the months and years that followed.
Here we are again, with Google Fiber pushing the envelope further and announcing 20 Gig service, using Nokia technology. Like many, I find these broadband speed race debates a little silly. Of course very few, if any, households NEED 20 Gig service. Heck most households still don't NEED 1 Gig service (including mine). But that's not the point. There's too many technologists pushing the envelope and too many marketers looking for that next edge to exploit. And humans tend to want newer, faster, better anyway. Don't see that changing.
So how long after we hear the ISP ecosystem of carriers and vendors bashing this 'silly' move of 20 Gig service, will we start to see more 20 Gig offers? Or have we finally gotten to the edge and 10 Gigs will be just fine, thank you very much Google Fiber?

VP Broadband Networks Business Unit - Bring Gigabit services to everyone
We’re excited to partner with Google Fiber to future-proof their network, and flexibly address their evolving network demands. We understand that service providers need to be able to select the right technology, based on their needs and business case. This is why we already offer #10G and #25G today, are trialing #50G, and developing #100G - ultimately leading to a full range of PON technologies that can be mixed and matched on the same platform and the same fiber.
