As many of you know (and there's a little green #opentowork flag on my mugshot!), I am continuing to explore my options for the next step in my career. In the meantime, I am consulting on the basis of my experience, skills and interests (#spacetech , #medtech, #healthtech, #scalingagile , #sustainablebusiness , #fieldservice , #customersuccess ...) with the lovely team of similarly passionate folk at Telos Digital. But I wanted to share a little story that set the bar on the recruiting process for me, and speaks of a company leading with their values in the #naturebasedsolutions #carboncapture #biofabrication space. Unlike most job announcements, here I am sharing that I didn't get this one. I applied to CyanoCapture, who are developing novel (and credible) processes to extract CO2 from waste gas using #cyanobacteria. A small startup on the brink of scaling up, I felt that my #scienceandtechnology background combined with team #leadership and #operationalexcellence would make me a good fit for their #coo role. At the end of the unsuccessful process, this was one of the few interactions I have had with a prospective employer that left me feeling completely valued and 'seen', even whilst also being rejected. Here's what they did right: -Set clear expectations of every step of the recruitment process, providing background materials and explaining what would be discussed at each interview stage -Used standardised tests and questions to narrow down from a large candidate pool -Were open to cross-pollination, seeing the value of skills won in a different domain -Communicated with respect and humility at every stage -Provided me with detailed and actionable feedback at the end of the process -Highlighted areas of my application that impressed, and explained why they needed something a little different -And most of all, remembered they were dealing with a person, not a CV CyanoCapture - Thanks 🙏 . ❓Have you...❓ Have you ever applied for a role that you know you can do only to hear that the hiring manager prefers to #hire to someone with #domain #experience; e.g. #fintech, #edtech, #healthtech, #biotech, etc, which you don't have? This can be devastating to hear. Let's look at some reasons why this might be the case: 1. Breaking into a new market - this can be challenging and putting the most experienced people at the forefront can make a difference in the speed of adoption and therefore #success. 2. Adaptability - the hiring manager may have seen a gap in #adaptability between people with and without domain experience. 3. The company's stage in the #lifecycle - this goes hand-in-hand with the first two items. If the company is in a growth mode and expanding into new brand markets (or new countries), it makes sense to build the strongest foundation possible. Just because the role didn't work out this time, doesn't mean it won't in the future. Do the #research to see what you can glean about the company. Maybe give it a year or so and reapply.
