When it comes to sport I'm nowhere near qualified to pass comment. When it comes to events and branding then I feel much more in my comfort zone. Paris, like many other Olympic events before it, has received it's fair share of criticism ahead of the opening, but I have to say that much of that feels to me like press and media filling gaps with gross exaggerations. Over the past couple of weeks I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the Paris Olympics. The achievements of all athlete's is remarkable, a genuine inspiration and something that the upcoming para-olympics takes to another level - simply incredible. All the stadia and the associated graphics, signage and general comms have looked fantastic. I have to admit that I am a big art deco fan, so the Paris theme has really appealed to me. Why am I telling you this? A big part of the reason for the success, I believe, is the clarity and consistency of the branding. It's something that can easily get out of control, there are a massive amount of stakeholders for an event of this size and this 'consistency' needs to be checked and adhered to much more than you might think. Most businesses aren't run like olympic teams and it's rare, if ever, that a business will ever be involved in something as large as an Olympic games, but the underlying attention to detail and consistency of branding across this type of event is what holds all of the fragments, stadia, people and presentations, broadcasts and socials together. The Paris work is a great combination of creative design and clear rules/consistency. The later ALWAYS gets overlooked in my world, people don't want to take on the responsibility a lot of the time - Yes I do often pick up this baton and run with it because I know how important it is. 😮 Why is the athletics track at the Stade de France purple for the Paris Olympics Games 2024? Reason 1️⃣: Camille Yvinec, director of brand identity for Paris 2024, said her teams had worked on the colour palette for two years. Ultimately, they picked purple for the Stade de France track as a reference to the lavender fields of the south of France, where cities such as Nice and Marseille are hosting some Olympic events. The purple track is meant to turn heads and leave an imprint in the historical record: That was in Paris. The color, organizers boast, was never seen before for an athletics track. Reason 2️⃣: To make history by making this the first competition to be held on a track of this purple colour. This will allow the images of the Paris 2024 Games to be engraved in the memories of spectators, television viewers and athletes alike", explained a press release, while the Italian firm Mondo was commissioned to produce the 13,000 m² track. Reason 3️⃣: Purple for better television coverage and an impactful viewer experience! More specifically, two shades of purple (a lighter one for the track and competition areas themselves, and a darker one for the technical areas) have been used to colour the facilities at the Stade de France. 2024 PARIS OLYMPIC OPENING The Paris 2024 Olympic Opening Ceremony was a mixed bag, falling short of the high expectations I had. The choice to use Paris itself as the stage, rather than constructing a temporary structure, was a bold and innovative move. It allowed the city's iconic landmarks and neighborhoods to serve as the backdrop, showcasing Paris in its natural splendor. However, the execution left much to be desired. For those unfamiliar with Paris, this was an opportunity to see the city’s highlights, its diverse arrondissements, and unique offerings. The ceremony was intended to be a grand homage to French culture and history, but it often felt more like a Non sport related spectacle than a marraige of genuine celebration of the Olympic spirit and anything about the host country . French culture is renowned globally, and while the ceremony touched on this, it didn’t fully engage with the global audience’s anticipation for a more dynamic and sport-focused presentation. The show had a fresh, Gen Z vibe, with young models taking the runway and athletes sailing along the Seine instead of the traditional parade route. This modern approach was refreshing but seemed to overshadow the Olympic athletes themselves. The appearance of high-profile celebrities like Lady Gaga and Céline Dion added star power, but this also shifted the focus from international athletes. There was a notable absence of fashion-forward collaborations that could have bridged the gap between sports and high fashion. Brands like Louis Vuitton and Balenciaga could have used this platform to showcase cutting-edge sportswear, combining luxury with athleticism. Demna as we all know has been showing these in the past season . Furthermore, integrating contemporary art that celebrates both the human form and athletic prowess, as well as giving visibility to marginalized LGBTQ Olympians, could have enriched the presentation. From a business perspective, while the show was undoubtedly entertaining and visually striking, it seemed to prioritize French cultural branding over a progressive marketing strategy that could have leveraged the global stage of the Olympics to appeal to a wider audience. The event missed a chance to blend tradition with innovation, leaving it feeling more like a celebration of French pride than a forward-looking, inclusive Olympic opening. #olympics #opening #2024parisolympics

Could the result of the Paris Olympic Opening have been better? I’ve been reflecting on the opening ceremony, and the industry's reaction to it has been pretty intense. This is my first chance to share my thoughts after connect with those outside the industry bubble. Most people I've talked to outside the industry seemed to enjoy the opening, despite the obvious feedback that it was “a little bit long”—something we've heard about almost every opening ceremony in the past. However, industry experts have been more critical, pointing fingers at the organisers for not having better weather contingencies, poor treatment of athletes stuck on the boats, boring and lack of engagement etc. What truly baffled me was how Paris chose to represent itself to the world. Gaga on the steps and the Moulin Rouge segments felt culturally empty and I absolutely agree, simple measures like covering key camera areas could have made a big difference without much hassle for organisers. It's really no excuse to not have wet weather contingencies these days. But! And this is a big but... One thing is certain: the Paris opening has broken the mould for Olympic ceremonies. It was a bold move to step out of the stadium and away from the finely tuned, glitzy tradition (whether they meant it or not). This has clearly shaken things up for future openings, and rightly so. TV viewership for the games is dropping significantly, signaling that the golden era of all-consuming games openings might be over. Could the result of the Paris opening have been better? Absolutely. It did seem like they bit off more than they could chew, trying to cover the sprawling city. But what’s exciting is the creative license now passed onto LA and Brisbane for their upcoming ceremonies. I’m looking forward to seeing how they’ll reinvent the experience, and would delight in the chance to be involved as the potential now seems open-ended.
