ZF Group and Voestalpine have announced a strategic partnership to incorporate Voestalpine's low-carbon GreenTec steel into ZF's production processes. This #collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), is a pivotal component of ZF´s ambitious green steel strategy, which is integral to its overarching goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2040. Central to this #partnership is a technological transition from traditional blast furnace methods to innovative electric furnace technology. This shift is environmentally significant, as it is expected to reduce CO2 emissions from approximately 2.1 tCO2e to 0.6 tCO2e. This represents a #reduction of over 70%, a substantial improvement in the carbon footprint of steel production. Decarbonizing supply chains is a critical focus for ZF to achieve carbon neutrality. The use of low-carbon steel is a major step towards this goal, significantly enhancing the environmental sustainability of ZF's supply chains. This partnership with Voestalpine is one among several initiatives to expand the use of green steel in its production lines. ZF has also formed alliances with H2Green Steel and Arcelor, underscoring its commitment to reducing the automotive industry's carbon #footprint. Gestamp purchases zero carbon steel from SSAB According to Gestamp, this agreement represents a new step in the long-standing partnership with SSAB, which includes several actions addressing all aspects of the development chain, from sales to production and testing of steel products. Javier Imaz, Gestamp purchasing manager, said: "This partnership will further strengthen our position in the development of innovatively designed and sustainable automotive parts for increasingly safer and lighter vehicles, thus reducing energy consumption and environmental impact. This agreement reinforces Gestamp's ESG strategy on the circular economy, which Gestamp is implementing across its entire business model." SSAB plans to offer fossil-free steel to the market on a commercial scale in 2026 and to largely eliminate CO2 emissions from its operations by 2030. Our CTO Martin Pei had a fireside chat at the EU Industry Days with Joaquim Nunes de Almeida, Director at DG GROW, discussing key industrial policies to succeed with the green transition and secure future competitiveness. Martin: "To do the net-zero transition, we need to accelerate deployment of clean technologies. But to do that, we need a policy framework to keep value chains in Europe and financial support for breakthrough technologies. To ensure a level playing field, it's important to create transparency around decarbonization efforts for all steelmaking processes." Delivering a green steel industry can support economic growth, infrastructure modernisation, wider NetZero capabilities and export potential.

Volkswagen Group is partnering with VULCAN GREEN STEEL – Part of Jindal Steel Group. This collaboration will significantly contribute to reducing the carbon footprint by incorporating low-carbon steel into the production processes from 2027 onwards.  In the initial years, Duqm operations will use natural gas. Later, they will transition to green energy, reducing carbon emissions by 70% once complete. The facility is currently under construction and is expected to be operational by 2026. "Decarbonizing supply chains is a decisive factor for the Volkswagen Group on the road to carbon neutrality. We want to achieve this goal by 2050 at the latest, and using low-carbon steel is an important step in this direction. On the one hand Steel manufacturing and construction industries are two major polluters. On the other hand they have been the major sources of developing our civilization and standard of living. It is heartening to know that considerable work is in progress to bring down carbon emission from these two sectors.

This new report from ResponsibleSteel™ has a few important lessons for automakers: -For the steel industry to meet its Paris Agreement obligations, every steel plant in the world needs to reach today’s average emissions intensity by 2030. An average steel plant today will be the industry’s worst polluter by 2030. -The energy-intensive steel industry can stimulate demand for near- zero emissions electricity, and automakers can play an important role by demanding suppliers clean up their supply chain emissions. -Steel recycling can play a role, but according to the report, “energy-intensive ironmaking processes will still be required in 2050 and must be decarbonised." Automakers can support decarbonization of the steel industry by producing smaller vehicles. Responsible Steel is asking steel buyers like automakers to: -Set specific goals for moving through the ResponsibleSteel Steel Certification progress levels toward fully decarbonized steel. -Join initiatives like SteelZero and First Movers Coalition -Implement an integrated procurement strategy including both site-level decarbonisation ratings and product-level absolute emissions.
