🔧 At NAPA, we believe consumers and independent auto repair shops should have access to essential tools and information for affordable, quality repairs. But that access is currently in jeopardy. The "Right to Repair" is a movement that ensures consumers can fix and modify their own modern devices, including computers, iPhones, tractors, and personal vehicles. This means having access to the necessary tools, parts, and information to perform these repairs. In the automotive industry, the independent auto care sector plays a crucial role, handling over 70% of post-warranty auto repairs. These independent shops typically offer their services at a 36% lower cost than dealer repairs, making car maintenance more affordable for consumers. Without updating current laws, manufacturers could restrict access to essential repair data and tools, preventing trusted independent repair shops from fixing their customers' cars. This would reduce consumer choices and increase repair costs. The REPAIR Act aims to protect these rights and ensure fair competition and access to quality motor vehicle repair. Supporting the REPAIR Act keeps consumer access to repair shops open, ensures repair tools and information are available, protects vehicle cybersecurity, provides transparency for drivers, and guarantees enforcement now and in the future. Drivers are keeping their vehicles for an average of 12.5 years because it is still cost-effective to maintain them. It is crucial for us to continue to have the right to service and maintain our automobiles by whom and where we choose. Automakers and legislators are challenging the auto industry by putting limits on who and where vehicles are maintained. In simple terms, automakers are trying to force car buyers to return to their dealerships only for maintenance and repairs by not sharing diagnostic tools and information with independent auto repair shops and car owners. They are standing their ground arguing that despite having access to diagnostics and parts, people can become injured by performing repairs that they are not professionally trained to do. Auto dealerships are still reeling from a cyberattack on niche industry software, that supports day-to-day operations, paralyzing auto dealers. As a result, many companies are turning to “old school” strategies. For example, they’re manually taking orders and writing them up by hand. But this may also impact customers whose data could’ve been compromised in the attack, a hot-button issue that’s been top of mind lately. It’s another reminder that cutting edge technology that makes our everyday tasks easier also comes with ample risk. Approximately 15,000 car dealerships across the US and Canada have experienced several days without access to essential software systems needed to operate their businesses. Service is offline. Sales have shifted to Paper applications or have stalled entirely Dealerships nationwide are struggling to get back online after a massive cyberattack. "CDK says its core product — called a dealer management system, or DMS — is “the engine” that drives auto retailers’ operations.
