Product Managers Data Analysts = Better Insights I recently had an enlightening call with Andreas Gross, currently a product leader at Meta, who held senior product positions at companies like Reddit and Credit Karma and is also one of our investors. One of the topics we covered was the relationship between PMs and data analysts. Andreas pointed out a common mistake by many PMs: They aren't actively involved in the report-building process undertaken by data analysts. Most of the PMs ask for a report and wait to read the final outcome. But Andreas recommends that PMs should be part of the process of building the analysis because the combination of business/product context and data context triggers many more insights and innovative ideas. Andreas also shares why this is one of the reasons he likes what we do in Loops - the depth of the insights that inspire teams to take action. Red flags to look out for in your startup's 1st product manager hire 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩 - Introduces a bunch of rigorous processes right out of the gate. - Doesn't spend the bulk of their first three months talking to users and using the product. - Tries to drastically revamp key product areas (e.g. onboarding flow) with superficial hacks. - Waits to be spoon fed information. - Doesn't question or challenge how things are done. - Spends more time talking about how they will do something than actually doing it. - Asks to bring on data analyst, copywriter, user researcher, product ops, or other highly-specialized roles. - Constantly name-drops previous companies to win an argument. - Asks to buy expensive tools so they can do their jobs properly. - Can't Google their way through an unfamiliar topic that isn't specific to the company." - "I've not done this, so I'm probably not the best person to do it." - Throws out high-level ideas, such as "let's improve activation" or "we need to prioritize UX", without any concrete suggestions. - Complains about the lack of instructions. - Runs full-blown research or A/B test for even tiny improvements. - Doesn't volunteer for tasks outside of product development. - Thinks that the 20 survey responses they collected are "data," but the hundreds of customer conversations the team has had are not. - Doesn't spend the bulk of their time talking to users and using the product. Over the past four years, I have worked as a product manager in the technology sector. Here's my story of why and how I switched to Product Management! I joined a very early stage but fast growing startup as my first real job after I graduated from college in 2021. I coded for last 2 years of college, mostly doing Machine Learning and Data Science. But once I graduated, I decided to change my field. I joined the team at Jar as their first full time Product Analyst, and I had no idea how product works or how product analysis is different from the stuff I was doing before that. So, I learned everything from scratch at Jar while running Crework on the side. As I was in a fast growing startup, I had to learn everything fast and I did. The learning curve was exponential, and it helped me understand so much about product, data and our users in that journey. There, I got introduced to the role of a product and growth managers for the first time and I loved it. I loved how hands on it was and how they had to really understand users to build stuff. Working with data daily also made it easy for me to see what was not working and the RCA made it easy to understand why it might not have worked. All of this while I was building Crework and helping other build and launch products. So, I decided that I should switch careers to product management. I knew it was something that is right for me. I would say, my experience with data in a leading B2C startup did make it easy to make the decision, otherwise I would never had been sure if I should go down this path or not. If I look back, I would say that it was a good decision. Although I switched to PM role in the ZIRP era, so… but that’s a debate for another day.
