International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC, did you change your mission without telling anyone? Why is it, then, that when the victims are Israeli Jews, you become silent? Do you not stand for women's rights? For people's right to live peacefully without fear of attack, let alone rape, torture, kidnapping, and mutilation? For children to be able to grow up without constant fear and #ptsd? When we hear about violence and injustice, it's normal to feel overwhelmed, especially when we don’t know all the facts. But just because there is more than one side, it doesn’t mean we can look away and refuse to “pick a side.” Any side that kills indiscriminately is wrong. Any side that oppresses, kidnaps, or attacks people is wrong. Complexity and uncertainty don’t excuse inhumanity, and the paralyzing feeling of atrocity doesn’t mean we can ignore it. Breathe. Recognize the humanity in all people. Listen to varied perspectives. Have patience with yourself and others as we all learn. Never have patience with cruelty. Never with vengeance. Tolerate others’ need to grow and understand. Never tolerate apathy—in yourself, in others, or in those in power. We’re all at a loss. We’re all confused. We all feel empathy, and we all feel like that’s not enough. And we’re right: Feeling for others is a start, but we need persistence. We need to keep talking, even when it’s complex, even when it’s uncomfortable. We need to advocate for solutions and understanding beyond unhelpful binaries. We need to stand up for what’s right and for those who need it most, always. Those of us who have the privilege of safety and the luxury to learn and speak out need to be stubborn in our hope. We stand with everyone calling for real solutions. It is the duty of those in power to pursue every possible avenue that halts the loss of innocent life. We believe deeply in the intrinsic worth of every life and the right of everyone to live freely, without fear of violence or oppression. There are no easy answers. But we can all keep learning. We must all keep caring. This weekend is International Missing Children’s Day (25/5). Let’s talk about the boys that the world would rather forget. The beautiful Bibas boys, missing since October 7, remain faceless and nameless for all of the leading children’s rights organisations. In failing to share their faces and names, they willfully contribute to the dehumanization of Israelis. In failing to name their captors, Hamas, they fail all children - including Palestinian children - who deserve safety and protection. All children are victims in this war. Selective humanitarianism is not humanitarianism. Selective advocacy undermines their important work. Their stated values of neutrality and impartiality are meaningless.
