#AI offers a wide range of possibilities to enhance the well-being of different groups and contribute to the #UN Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs). However, it can deepen economic, knowledge, gender, and cultural divides: #AI is usually still designed, developed, monitored, and evaluated without systematic #Diversity and gender #Equality (DGE) approaches. This precludes it from achieving its potential for social good, and increases harm to already marginalised groups. To mitigate this, the GPAI project "Towards Real Diversity and Gender Equality in AI" was initiated in collaboration with Mila - Institut québécois d'intelligence artificielle to provide the ecosystems with tools, frameworks, and resources for effective DGE strategies throughout the AI life cycle. In 2023, the team conducted: ▪ A review of existing literature on the topic ▪ Consultations with AI stakeholders ▪ Discussions with marginalised individuals ▪ Analyses of current initiatives in this area This year, they will publish a final report with recommendations and a practical guide to foster systemic gender inclusion in the AI ecosystems. 🌐 Get to Know #DIVERSIFAIR 🌐 The #DIVERSIFAIR project is working towards addressing intersectional bias in AI systems. One of our key objectives is to promote gender equality within the sector, as women are heavily underrepresented in AI. The Global Gender Gap Report 2022 highlights the importance of digitalised Intersectional AI Bias training, as more women are engaging in online skilling, re-skilling, and upskilling. Despite progress, women are still underrepresented in STEM: the gender gap is most prevalent with only 1.7% of women graduating in ICT compared to 8.2% of men. Data ethics and fairness are crucial in the development of AI systems. While efforts have been made to mitigate bias, it is essential to address deeper structural inequalities. Machine learning models can be powerful tools in supporting initiatives to combat gender-based violence, like the Viogen project in Spain and the Eagle Eye AI platform in the Dominican Republic. 📣Pleased to share that ITU Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific organized a webinar on the link between artificial intelligence (AI) and gender equality and social inclusion on 21 May 2024 supported by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade through the project “Enhancing the Development of Standards and Frameworks for Critical Technologies in Southeast Asia”. 💻 The webinar was opened by Ms. Atsuko Okuda, ITU’s Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, who highlighted the need for guardrails around AI to mitigate risks associated with the technology and to ensure that the benefits of AI are broadly dispersed. 💡The webinar discussed algorithmic bias, the feminization of AI, and the real-world implications of discriminatory AI systems for women and vulnerable groups. The introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) was a welcome development and I believe it can help us attain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Looking at SDG #5, we can achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls with the use of AI. The use of AI in the fight for gender equality removes bias in recruitment. Gender stereotype impacts are reduced by using algorithms that focus on qualifications, skills and experience whilst disregarding the gender of the individual. In addition, gender equality is also achieved by the use of AI as it empowers female entrepreneurs by providing valuable insights and solutions to challenges in a traditionally male dominated industry. As such they are able to succeed. Diversity is also promoted in AI development encouraging the creation of more AI systems that cater to the needs of diverse gender groups. The list of how AI can be used to fight for gender equality is long and we can all discuss them in the comments. NGOs leverage AI to fortify legal empowerment initiatives, furthering women's rights. Agency and access were two compelling themes that emerged from this trio of panelists at A World of AI Driven Tech: Addressing a Global Talent Gap. Elspeth McOmish, Programme Specialist, Gender Equality Division at UNESCO discussed the massive, unregulated disruption AI has been to education and the need for cooperative guidance for educators. Dr. Irina Mirkina, AI Lead, Office of Innovation at UNICEF elaborated further on their broad mandate for quality education for girls and the collaborative effort underway to create competency frameworks. Kevin Frey, CEO of Generation Unlimited joined the discussion about cooperation between agencies, governments, and private sector partners. His unique insight highlighted the need for girls in underserved communities to have not only the agency to solve their own problems, but access to the resources to do so. TAIFA and its growing ecosystem of partners addresses issues of access and agency through cooperative networks of grass roots organizations and a strategy for girl-focused tech education. Just read the first edition of the Global Index On Responsible AI and found it a good read to understand how countries are progressing with responsible AI. The report highlights that many countries are actively engaging in international collaborations to promote responsible AI. Despite growing awareness, gender equality remains a critical gap. The report shows that only a handful of countries have frameworks addressing gender and AI, but non-state actors, especially civil society and academia, are making significant strides in this area. The report also highlights significant gaps in ensuring AI respects human rights. Many countries lack mechanisms like AI impact assessments, access to redress, and public procurement guidelines. For example, the Philippines is proactively addressing these gaps with a proposed law that ensures human alternatives to AI systems and access to human intervention in case of malfunctions. At a #csw68 session on AI today, we heard about both the possibilities for addressing gender equality gaps, and the risk of perpetuating existing negative gender norms in AI programming. Ahmed Faruk Diken from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) talked about how AI can provide personalized tailored learning experiences for young women entrepreneurs, increase accessibility to learning resources for disabled women, and foster creativity, innovation and resilience among young women. Dr. Azza Karam acknowledged the many gender benefits of AI. Yet she also reminded us that only 22% of AI positions are occupied by women, and that AI operating systems have embedded sexist cultural norms within them. She encouraged us to be intentional and strong advocates for historically excluded groups of women, as new systems of oppression can become systematic in our technology. “We are only as strong as the most vulnerable among us.” #ai #genderequality
