Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogue semaglutide, approved as a weight loss medication, brought a promising alternative to surgical treatment. Dr. Sandra Mitic, MD-PhD, MscPH describes the effects of GLP-1 analogues and compares them to bariatric surgery. In this article Dr. Marius Hermanns, Sarah Hogekamp, and Yaryna Kolomiytseva analyze the impact of heatwaves on mortality in selected European countries from 2000–2019 and in South Korea from 2010–2019. Overall, the effects of extreme heat duration appear to be most prominent for the oldest age group and least prominent but still significant for the younger age groups of 0 to 64 and 65 to 74 years. These findings on additional deaths caused by extreme heat and heatwaves may result in a potential burden for life insurance companies. #Mortality #MedicalUnderwriting #InsuranceResearch

Samuel Lim provides an overview of the key findings and their implications for the Critical Illness (#CI) business. Among other findings, we noticed that the entry age for new CI insurance in Mainland China is significantly younger than in Hong Kong or Singapore. There is growing evidence that extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, have an impact on morbidity and mortality around the world. Sarah Hogekamp presents recent data on heatwave-related mortality in Europe and the U.S., as well as data on influenza-related deaths. She also highlights the actuarial relevance of these findings. The findings indicate that adjustments to our behaviour and environment could mitigate excess heat-related mortality in the future. #mortality #lifeinsurance #climatechange
