23 years ago, the Comisión Federal para la Protección contra Riesgos Sanitarios (COFEPRIS) was created in Mexico. The country, which is one of the locations where Intrials operates, is an important driver for the regional R&D ecosystem. Therefore, COFEPRIS plays a strategic role in promoting clinical research in LATAM. According to Statista, as of 2024, Mexico has 4,949 active clinical trials, which makes it the regional leader alongside Brazil - first in the rank. Recently, the institution launched DIGRIPRIS, a digital platform created to optimize the approval process for innovative health projects within the institution, an example of commitment to modernization for other LATAM regulatory entities. COFEPRIS is also a regulatory member of the International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH), which further stresses its relevance for both local and global healthcare innovation ecosystem. CHESSMEN joint action meets in Lisbon for mid-term review CHESSMEN joint action beneficiaries, affiliated members and external advisory board members met in Lisbon on 17 and 18 June 2024 to review ongoing activities and reflect on the forthcoming actions. All work package leaders presented updates of their activities and identified issues for joint discussions. The European Commission and the European Medicines Agency have also actively participated in the meeting. Participants were welcomed by the President of the Executive Board of INFARMED, I.P., Rui Santos Ivo, who stressed the importance of the project to address medicines shortages in the European Union. 🌿 Reflecting on ICBC Berlin: Insights and Inspirations As the CEO and Co-Founder of Plena Global, I left ICBC Berlin more invigorated than ever. Additionally, there was an air of positivism and a feeling that the industry was finally moving. This has has not been felt for the last few years. On 17th and 18th June INFARMED, I.P. hosted the interim meeting of the #CHESSMEN joint action. Project's beneficiaries, affiliated members and external advisory board members met in Lisbon to review ongoing activities and reflect on the forthcoming actions. As the first major M&A-related bond issuance in the US investment-grade market this year, the financing will pay for the cash portions of Bristol Myers' purchase of drugmakers Karuna and Rayzebio. Big US pharma companies like Bristol Myers have been keen to buy clinical stage drugmakers – often at lofty premiums – to replace existing therapies that are facing patent expirations over the next few years. Sad not to travel to Brussels for DIA EU this year. Why is this sad ? For me DIA is one of the best opportunities to bring academia, agencies, payers, industry and other key healthcare players together at one place - this year in Brussels for the DIA EU meeting. And it is a „safe harbor“ where you really connect, discuss, update and inform on general important topics shaping the regulatory environment. But project discussions, individuals might be interested about, stay outside. Over years participating or running sessions or panel discussion or speaking on the podium it is a fantastic atmosphere and feels a bit like coming home. I also missed a fantastic DIAmond session on ACT EU chaired by Peter Arlett that I was preparing for and really looking forward to attend on the podium representing EFPIA and pharmaceutical industry. With last minute having to decline the session I want to thank Stefan Schwoch for stepping in at short notice and both Stefan and Peter for their flexibility. So why did I not travel to DIA ? Well, if you do not feel well and if the test does show you this you better stay home and in bed and do not risk infecting colleagues, friends and partners. This is what I decided (and hope that others would do as well being in a similar situation) and I look forward to next DIA and hopefully being in better conditions. In April 2023, medical regulatory authorities of Colombia (INVIMA), Cuba (CECMED), and Mexico (COFEPRIS) signed the “Declaration of Acapulco” for the creation of the Latin American and Caribbean Medicines and Medical Devices Regulatory Agency (AMLAC).
