Today marks the start of my 27th year of military service as a dedicated reservist. Over the course of three different branches, I’ve had an incredible experience. Earlier this month, I advanced to Master Chief Petty Officer, in the Coast Guard Reserve. This is the culmination of a career spent with some of the greatest members of our country’s military. These are not easy years, and there is a toll to military service, both for the body and the mind.
My law enforcement career, which spans over two decades, is similar in that it was also not easy. Again, service equates to sacrifice: our bodies, our minds, and our families.
Times have changed since I started this journey and we need to do more to take care of each other and ourselves. For those of us who have been around, we need to develop the next generation-a generation that will be technically proficient in their field, serve with empathy & compassion, and be better prepared to mentally, emotionally, and physically handle the trauma of their fields.
