Congratulations to our Rajat Gangrade, Ph.D. on being named Young Member of the Year by the Underground Construction Association. The award honors professionals who have made "personal commitments to improving the tunnel and underground construction industry."
Rajat is part of our geotechnical and tunnel engineering team in San Francisco and shares three pieces of advice for those looking to enter the industry:
1. Build your network: Attend conferences, events, webinars and establish connections with professionals in the field. Identify mentors who can provide guidance and support as you navigate your career in tunneling.
2. Stay committed to learning: Tunneling is a dynamic and evolving field that requires a bit of commitment toward continued professional development. Stay curious, be willing to learn, and be open to new ideas/approaches.
3. Consider specialization and practical experience: Tunneling focused courses or certifications are valuable in keeping up to date with the state-of-the-art practices. Project site visits and practical experience on a tunnel project site are invaluable and must be pursued.

📖 Your story:
I am the UK Discipline Lead for Ground Engineering for SYSTRA UK & Ireland Ltd and I proudly have a #SquigglyCareer.
I am British-Malaysian, born and bred Bristolian (which will save anyone who speaks to me the awkwardness of accent placing), who married a Yorkshireman. Having fell in love with God's Own County, I have lived half my life up north, and thus have a weird brizzle:yorkshire accent. Which one you get depends on mood ;) #TryNotToGetFullYorkshire
Being surrounded by gorges and the works of Brunel in Bristol, I can now see that my route to engineering was part accident, but also very much influenced by my environment, curiosity and general love of rocks.
I am a proud Geologist and Engineer because I get to see the wide impact that being an Ground Engineer has on the day to day lives of a person.
👷♀️ Who or what inspired you:
I became an Engineer having taken an Engineering Geology module during my undergraduate masters in Geology at the University of Bristol. I was fortunate to have Professor Brian Hawkins as my lecturer, and his character got me enchanted by the prospect of a real world application of a subject I adored. Whilst I started on a pathway to Engineering Geology, through experience I realised that given my time again I would most likely still be where I am now but would have chosen a civil based route. #OnceARockLoverAlwaysARockLover
🏆 Your career wins and innovative ideas:
My proudest project is always the #RoyalShakespeareTheatre. You don't get to work in a project team so passionate and aligned on all projects.
But the projects I like working on are those where others have failed to provide a constructible option, and by bringing a little innovative #OutsideOfTheBox thinking, and working closely with the Contractor and supply chain, you get to something that meets the objective over the brief. #A57ManchesterRoad
💪 Challenges you've overcome:
THE Biggest challenge I have overcome - and something I am very passionate about - is proving that being a flexibly working female engineer does not mean that you are lesser than. I'm not saying that the pathway is cleared of all obstacles, but now it is more trodden and therefore easier for others to follow and improve.
👩🏫 Advice for future engineers:
Be authentic to yourself, your drives, your passions. This is what keeps you going. Technical advancement is one part of the person, do not dismiss the importance of the "soft skills", these are your super powers. And read, read, read... technical books, leadership books, and fiction books. All bring inspiration in different way.

If so, you might be wondering whether to pursue a year in industry or a degree apprenticeship, take a more traditional option. 🤔
Both options have their pros and cons, but let me share with you why I think a degree apprenticeship is the way to go. 👇
A degree apprenticeship is a new and innovative way of combining academic learning with practical experience. It is not just a university course with a placement year. It is a tailor-made programme that aligns with the needs of the industry and the aspirations of the learner and the needs of the industry organisation. 🙌
You will still learn the essential skills and theory of ground engineering, such as soil mechanics, rock mechanics, coding, project work, and team work. But you will also gain valuable context, understanding, and insight into the real-world challenges and opportunities of this exciting field, which is critical to our net-zero pathway: ground models, ground risk assessments and HUGE geophysical and geotechnical site investigations over multiple years for each GW. 💯
You will work with a reputable employer who will support your development and mentorship. You will earn a salary while you study and graduate with a recognised degree and little to no debt. You will also have a competitive edge in the job market and a clear career path ahead of you. 🚀
Sounds too good to be true, right? 😲
Well, it is not. Thanks to the efforts of Nick Koor and Geoscience UK, the geoscience degree apprenticeship is now available to universities and employers across the country. 🙏
Nick Koor is a pioneer and a leader in this field. He has been working tirelessly for years to create a course that benefits all parties involved: students, employers, and universities. He has also been a great source of inspiration and guidance for me and many others in the ground engineering community. 🙌
If you want to learn more about the degree apprenticeship and how to apply, I recommend you check out these links:

I hope this post has sparked your interest and curiosity. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave them below. I would love to hear from you. 😊 I’m sure Nick Koor and Paul Roberts can give much more information on this! 📖
And if you know someone who might benefit from this information, please share it with them. You never know, you might change their life. 🙏
