#TeamGEI welcomes Charles DeMayo to the #environmental team in our Woburn, Massachusetts office. Charlie just graduated from University of Massachusetts Amherst with a major in Environmental Science (with a concentration in Ecology and Natural Systems) and a minor in Natural Resource Conservation. He enjoys the outdoors throughout the year, including the cold winter months. We’re glad to have you on board Charlie! #JoinGEI

“Mayflies on the move: The nuisance with an ecological benefit” ICYMI, Dr. Bill Hintz, associate professor in The University of Toledo's Department of Environmental Science, spoke with WTOL11 News about the important role mayflies play in the health of our water. He says part of this importance is due to the direct connection that the land and lake have. "So what we call this in ecology or environmental science is an aquatic-terrestrial linkage," Hintz said. "And so, everything in the water is linked to the land, and the land is linked to the water." Which means mayflies tell a larger story. "This mayfly hatch can be an indicator of how healthy those connections are in the terrestrial and the aquatic environment in Lake Erie," said Hintz. Peatland restoration is a piece in the puzzle 🧩 Last week, I joined 80 conservationists at The Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management’s Wales conference to learn how vital ecosystems are being restored. From the day, I particularly enjoyed hearing about the lessons the RSPB & Severn Trent learnt during their ‘Project of a Lifetime’. Their 68-year endeavour has involved taking an ecology led approach to fully restoring the blanket bogs of Lake Vyrnwy. Here’s my three takeaways… 🌎 – Partnerships with brands, such as the RSPB, can help organisations to become environmental leaders. 📖 – Balancing the interests of stakeholders, tenants and landowners requires different narratives to be used when communicating project gains (e.g. ROI, environmental benefits, etc). 🗺️ – The digitalisation of assets, such as field maps and project models, gives organisations access to live updates and more accurate data for projects. It was really positive to hear ecologists and businesses advocating the benefits of peatlands and to learn about the impact their work is having across Wales. WCT’s Fiscal Principles project aims to harness public finance as a mechanism to safeguard not just natural ecosystems, but also the development needs of communities that live in and around these ecosystems. It also aims to expand the ambit of the existing devolution formula suggested by 15th Finance Commission, and create incentives for maintaining non-forested ecosystems such as grassland, scrubland, wetland and desert, instead of focusing solely on ‘green cover’. On 21st March 2024, WCT organised a consultation on ‘Improving Forest and Ecology Grant of the Finance Commission’, which brought together some of India’s best minds in ecology, wildlife conservation, forest management, economics, public finance and public policy. The group deliberated on the possibilities of modifying the criterion and formula for devolution of funds from the current ‘forest and ecology’ one to a more comprehensive ‘ecosystem functionality’ approach; and the implications of protecting such ecosystems on the communities that reside within them. High-Integrity Marine Natural Capital Markets in the UK – A Roadmap For Action was launched on Tuesday at the Houses of Parliament. It has been developed with Pollination and funded by The Crown Estate, Blue Marine Foundation, Crown Estate Scotland, Esmée Fairbairn Foundation with contributions from IFB Partners, the University of Portsmouth and UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH). A first-of-its-kind for the UK roadmap was co-designed through a year-long initiative involving more than 200 UK and international stakeholders. It sets out recommendations and key actions for developing high-integrity markets that can support the conservation and restoration of the UK’s vital marine and coastal environments. Marine natural capital markets which are high-integrity will enable funding for marine restoration and protection and deliver real measurable value for people and nature. The roadmap is a milestone for bringing actors together and aims to provide a critical guide for action over the next few years. https://lnkd.in/efQ7uhQp #infinbio #naturalcapitalmarkets #marinemarkets #biodiversityfinance #greenfinance

Wondering why we keep an eye on Lake Simcoe? 🌊🔍 Lake Simcoe isn't just a picturesque spot—it's vital for drinking water, recreation, and as a natural resource. To ensure it stays that way, we closely monitor its environmental health year-round. This helps us detect any new environmental challenges. In partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks, and the Ministry of Natural Resources, we study how the lake's ecology evolves over time. Our scientific approach addresses concerns from residents and lake enthusiasts, ensuring Lake Simcoe remains a safe and vibrant hub for everyone. Let's keep our lake thriving for generations to come! 💧🌳 #LakeSimcoe #EnvironmentalHealth #LakeMonitoring #LakeDoctor #LakesAppreciationMonth

The natural systems around us perform critical functions — ecosystem services — providing communities with clean air, clean water, healthy food, and hazard mitigation. The Envision framework's Natural World category responds to the way a project is located within these systems and the new elements they may introduce that can create unwanted impacts. Read about what the framework says about infrastructure projects and the natural world, including the inter-related aspects of Siting, Conservation, and Ecology. https://lnkd.in/exEmkQtc

“The myriad values of Wildlands (for biodiversity, clean water, climate change mitigation and resilience, and human mental health, to name a few) are well established…To imply that Wildlands are little more than an illusion…is counterproductive at best, and reckless at worst.” - Zack Porter Porter, Executive Director of Standing Trees, presents a spirited counterpoint to the Beyond the ‘Illusion of Preservation’ report in From the Ground Up’s Autumn issue, saying it “throws cold water” on recent momentum for Wildlands and recovery of old-growth forests in New England. He identifies three illusions of the report itself, weighing in specifically the placed-based nature of wildlands, and the role of public lands in rewilding. The report’s authors, he opines, rely on “illusions…that buttress the status quo instead of helping to realize the Wildlands and Woodlands vision.” From the Ground Up’s chief goal is to inspire and share conversations about conservation, climate, and communities in New England. Porter’s response is a welcome addition to the dialogue. An integrated approach to conservation requires people with different perspectives coming together to understand one another.
