When trapped on a Desert Island just hope that you have a Contractor their. In my experience, the construction industry in the UK ‘North’ cultivates a workforce that is characterised by less frequent job changes and a strong demographic lineage of constructors and engineers. This lineage ensures that the full cycle of design, commission, and implementation is thoroughly achieved on projects, fostering both individual and collective learning. The nature of work also allows for more productive time to be spent on site and encourages the development of various peripheral observational skills. While theoretical knowledge from books is valuable, it can become repetitive, making practical application essential in the early learning curve. Day release courses play a crucial role in reinforcing taught skills on site. My understanding of a "master framework" enabled me to undertake research, reference sources correctly, and improve my academic performance. However, it's important to note that applying BIM technologies alone are not a substitute for genuine human learning. Clash Detection and ‘tolerances’ applied need to take into account the physical constraints of working at height, restricted space, poor lighting. Safe installation, maintenance and eventually ‘life cycle’ replacement and site ‘problem solving’ cannot be ‘learned’ from behind a desk. Similarly, in this way 🤔 sustainability and post-evaluation should be embraced by constructors and engineers, as they are closely involved in the operational aspects that can lead to significant improvements. Digital Building Information Modeling (BIM) is valuable, but its true impact lies in the human experience, as individuals apply the software to their work outputs. Any digital software should consider how it will be used to create efficiencies, as a small input can have a large impact on the output. In any scenario, the expertise of a constructor is irreplaceable. There's no substitute for their skills, especially when you find yourself on a desert island without access to a convenience store.
