Solar Power’s Giants Are Providing More Energy Than Big Oil You know ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, bp, TotalEnergies, ConocoPhillips, and Eni. But what about Tongwei Solar, GCL Technology Holdings Limited, Xinte Energy, LONGi Solar Green Energy, Trina Solar, JA Solar, and Jinko Solar Co., Ltd.? These solar giants are now as significant—if not more so—than traditional oil companies. In the mid-20th century, the Seven Sisters dominated the global energy landscape. Today, China's solar sector is the new disruptor. While Big Oil produces vast amounts of energy, much of it is wasted. In contrast, solar manufacturers convert their output into highly efficient, long-lasting energy. ExxonMobil produces about 8.3 exajoules (EJ) annually, Shell 6.2 EJ. However, only a fraction becomes useful power. Major solar companies now rival these outputs. For instance, Tongwei’s planned expansion could surpass ExxonMobil's energy contribution. Solar panels generate electricity for decades, outlasting oil and gas consumption. Chinese solar firms have a bigger stake in the 21st-century energy market than the Seven Sisters had in the 20th. #Growth #RenewableEnergy #Solar #Transition #Energy #Decarbonisation #Innovation #Transformation #NetZeroTransition #Sustainability #ESG I Bloomberg News I David Fickling

EPC and other suppliers that truly believe in the transition have invested heavily to position themselves so that when the time comes they are awarded. Such was the case this week with McDermott International, Ltd, an EPC contractor headquartered in Houston. It has been awarded an Early contractor agreement for Canada’s first commercial green hydrogen and ammonia project in Newfoundland by Abraxas Power. This $8.72 billion Canadian project includes the development of up to a 530 turbine wind farm with the ability to generate 3.5 gigawatts of electricity and a solar photovoltaic installation with the ability to generate 150 megawatts. The facility is expected to have the capacity to produce 165kta of hydrogen and 5000 metric tons of ammonia per day. This results from McDermott taking early bets in hydrogen and energy transition space, including its collaboration with Element Fuels on its hydrogen-powered clean fuels refinery. This is also a testament that it is Houston's talent and skillset that will lead and deliver on the energy transition. #greenhydrogen #ammonia #energytransition #energycapital #climatetech #VC
