A STUDENT IDEA...
Thirteen years ago this week, I came across a striking design featured on the front pages of the UK national newspapers—a tribute to the legendary Steve Jobs, who had just passed. The designer behind it was a young talent named Jonathan Mak . Intrigued, I tracked him down and flew to Hong Kong to meet him. We met in my hotel, and when I asked what he’d like to drink, he simply ordered a Coke. Little did I know what was to come...
I wanted to hire him, but he was still completing his design course. However, he mentioned he’d love to collaborate if I had a project for him.
A few months later, I had a brief for Coca-Cola and sent it his way. A week passed and he sent back a brilliant idea.
Five months later, Jonathan walked onto the stage with me at the Cannes Festival of Creativity to collect his Grand Prix, becoming the youngest person ever to win it—at just 19 years old.
That ad has since become the most awarded in Coca-Cola’s history.
I often tell this story whenever I go into colleges to give talks to students as I find it incredibly inspiring.
And if you do too, then please repost.
So if someone says ‘that’s a bit of a student idea’ it isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Attending College Fashionista’s #CreatorsLoft on September 7 during New York Fashion Week was an enriching experience. From the moment I arrived, soaked from the rain, I was met with warmth and inspiration, especially after speaking with Sola Desgagne, Director of Marketing at Garage Clothing.
During the Garage Mentor session, I asked Sola about career stability in marketing, given the industry’s constant evolution. Her advice was insightful: stability comes from adaptability 🌟 As long as you grow with brands, embrace change, and enjoy the process 🎉, you’ll find stability in your career. This shifted my perspective on what it means to have a secure career in any field.
Sola also told me that she’s a generalist and told me about the importance of versatility 🎯 Her experience showed that having a broad skill set not only makes you adaptable but also enables you to thrive in a changing industry 🚀. This advice will guide me as I continue to grow professionally.
I also discovered Garage Clothing’s inspiring mission to create a safe space where women can express themselves authentically 👗. Their all-female team fosters inclusivity and comfort, allowing women to be unapologetically themselves 💡.
Key takeaways:
🌟 Adaptability is crucial for stability in any field.
🎯 Versatility opens doors to growth and success.
🎉 Enjoying the journey makes work more fulfilling.
👗 Empowerment and supporting inclusive brands lead to meaningful careers.

A Case Study: Elevating Breitling to a Billion Dollar Brand
A great case study of how a brand repositioned itself by going back to its core equity (Purposeful Action) and combining it with cultural relevance to drive relevance.
3 things that stood out for me:
1. Unique way to bring out active collectivism by launching the squad concept and cultivating a community
2. Tying in new product launches with purpose by tying to different squads
3. Extending into immersive experiences like the Breitling Townhouse and Kitchen
The approach of purpose culture repositioning also drove business: 40% YoY sales, 9th top Swiss watch company (up from 19th place)

In between the runway shows and presentations within Emerging Talents Milan, for the group of volunteers from Fashion4Futures, I recently gave a short talk to students on the importance of self-branding, particularly for those in creative fields. One key point I emphasized is that having a well-curated social media presence aligned with your professional work is essential. Self-presentation is a crucial aspect of how you are perceived as a creative and a professional. You need to present yourself with intention, ensuring your social media reflects your skills, style, and unique perspective.
I also discussed the importance of having a strategy - knowing how to use platforms to showcase your work, communicate your vision, and engage your audience. Alongside this, I touched on the differences between creative direction and styling, and how these roles display in various formats such as runway shows, magazine editorials, and presentations. Understanding these differences helps shape a cohesive and effective brand identity across different channels.
In short, if you’re a creative professional, your online presence needs to be just as thought-out as your projects.
Thank you Ilyssa Wexler and Tariel Bisharyan for cooperation
