Saturday Night Live's season finale parodied the serious issues perpetuated by fast fashion giants like Shein and Temu, calling out the poor material quality, unethical labor practices, and major environmental footprint. This coincides with New York moving closer to passing the Fashion Sustainability and Social Accountability Act, aimed at increasing transparency in #retail supply chains and reducing environmental harm. Fast fashion is the second most polluting industry, surpassed only by oil, responsible for over ten percent of global emissions and significant wastewater production. "It takes almost 8,000 liters of water to make one pair of jeans," according to the UN. Discarded jeans add to the 21 billion tons of textiles in landfills each year, with three in five items discarded within a year of production. New York's proposed legislation is a crucial step towards a commitment to #sustainablefashion. 🌏♻ Watch the SNL skit below!

What extent are clothing take-back schemes delivering on their promises and effectively addressing the systemic waste issues generated by the fashion industry? An investigation by the changing markets foundation conducted between August 2022 and July 2023, set out to trace items submitted to these take-back schemes, to establish what actually happens to clothing beyond the deposit bin. Through discreet airtag trackers concealed within clothing, they tracked, in real time, 21 items submitted to ten fashion brands (H&M, Zara, C&A, Primark, Nike, Boohoo, New Look, The North Face, Uniqlo and M&S) at their stores in the UK, France, Belgium and Germany. All clothes returned in this way to the brand’s take-back schemes were of good quality, originally bought from second-hand clothes shops, and therefore considered suitable for reuse. The results are pretty shocking but not unsurprising if you know you know.
