What your child's World Book Day costume says about you. Urgh. As if Mum Guilt wasn't enough 😭
In a week where we celebrate World Book Day, International Women's Day, and Mother's Day a few days apart, let's not ignore the weight of societal expectations.around them.
Last night my husband and I found ourselves dutifully ironing fabric badges onto old clothes for our child's costume, trying to strike a balance between putting an effort in, but not being too try-hard (he's not even turned 2 yet!)
We took our obligatory front-door pictures and shared them in the family WhatsApp, but were careful not to post them offline (because you know #DangersOfAI #Consent).
These celebrations, while fun, also highlight some crucial issues:
- The cost of living crisis is deepening, and the commercialisation of these events can add to the financial strain on families.
- Despite strides towards equality, the bulk of organising gifts and costumes often still falls on women.
- We've made progress, but we're still far from true gender equality.
So, as we celebrate the joy of reading, women's achievements, and the love of mothers, let's keep these conversations alive. How can we make these events less stressful for families? How can we share responsibilities better? And how do we keep working towards gender equality? 💭
