Today, Randeep Sarai and Benoit-Antoine Bacon celebrated $140M in Canadian Science funding for projects that will advance the development of life-saving medicines as part of Canada’s Immuno-Engineering and Biomanufacturing Hub (CIEBH) led by UBC. The funding supports four multidisciplinary research projects through CIEBH, a UBC-led alliance of more than 50 academic, industry, not-for-profit and health system partners that have come together to make Canada a leader in advanced immune-based therapeutics like RNA vaccines, antibody treatments and cell therapies. Collectively, the projects aim to establish an end-to-end drug development pipeline that will enable Canada to mount a rapid 100-day response to emerging pandemic threats and other health challenges. After my recent note about #sicklecelldisease I felt compelled to amplify this recent news about Pfizer Global Blood Therapeutics therapy Oxbryta. Per this story by Sickle Cell Disease News Oluwatosin Adesoye ~80% of #scd births take place in sub-Saharan Africa and a staggering 50%-80% of those children will die before their 5th birthday: https://lnkd.in/ggCFJRqU It is unlikely that "curative" therapies like bluebird bio Zyfgenia and Vertex Pharmaceuticals CRISPR Therapeutics will become available in Africa given high prices and the logistical challenges of ex vivo autologous cell therapy. I hope some of our considerable #biopharma ingenuity can be deployed in the direction of solving major public health issues like #scd. We have more innovation than ever and more biotech investment than ever. There must be funding and financing and #medicaltourism models that allows the poorer countries to get a foothold in this renaissance of innovation. I hope Pfizer has a plan to use their considerable global resources to eventually bring Oxbryta to #Africa, perhaps through some innovative private-public partnership. 🤞
