It's thrilling to see the incredible research that's conducted around the world with CONVERGE. One recent study is a collaboration between Argonne National Laboratory and Purdue University, described in the paper: Pal, P., Braun, J., Karimli, K., Athmanathan, V., Paniagua, G., and Meyer, T.R., "Large-Eddy Simulation of a Hydrogen-Air Non-Premixed Rotating Detonation Combustor Coupled With a Downstream Nozzle," 2023 AIAA Aviation Forum, AIAA 2023-4271, San Diego, CA, United States, Jun 12โ16, 2023. In this work, Argonne National Laboratory performed a large-eddy simulation (LES) study to investigate the combustion dynamics in a full-scale hydrogen-air non-premixed rotating detonation combustor (RDC) coupled with a downstream nozzle.ย In addition, the flow characteristics at the nozzle exit were also studied with implications for RDC-turbine integration for stationary power generation applications.ย The simulated configuration corresponds to the Turbine-integrated High-Pressure Optical rotating detonation engine (RDE) rig at Purdue University. Detailed chemistry, autonomous meshing, and adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) were leveraged to efficiently model supersonic combustion in the RDC.ย The first view shows the chaotic detonation initiation phase wherein the RDC is ignited using a pre-detonator tube containing hydrogen-oxygen mixture (spark-ignited at the far end). Hydrogen and air enter at the bottom of the RDC channel through discrete injection ports and plenum/throat, respectively (not shown here). The second view shows the quasi-steady state behavior with sustained propagation of a single detonation wave within the annulus. The LES accurately predicts both the number of waves and wave speed. It's SciTech week! While I can't be there in person, I wanted to share an awesome simulation of lean blow-off (LBO) in a gas turbine combustor. Here we simulated LBO for two fuels: A-2 (a conventional Jet-A fuel) and C-1 (an alternative fuel). Note that the equivalence ratio (represented by phi in the animation) is dropping for each of the fuels until the lean limit is reached. CONVERGEโs innovative meshing technique drastically reduces the time it takes to set up and run gas turbine engine simulations. In this video, we leveraged autonomous meshing, large eddy simulations, and detailed chemistry to simulate LBO. The combustor geometry preserved all flow passages and included the dome, liners, dilution jets, and effusion cooling holes. CONVERGE was able to accurately predict the difference in LBO limits for the two fuels within a reasonable amount of time. This #ThrowbackThursday, weโre spotlighting a presentation from the 2023 CONVERGE CFD Conference by olivier laget from IFP Energies nouvelles, โHydrogen Internal Combustion Engine Developments: Physical Phenomena and Related Challenges.โ While battery electric vehicles have gained popularity in recent years, current battery technology struggles to meet the demands of high-power applications. Hydrogen has a high energy density, and hydrogen engines produce very low levels of CO2 during operation, making them an attractive alternative to diesel engines. In this presentation, Olivier showcases a study using CONVERGE to simulate a medium- to heavy-duty hydrogen direct-injection engine. The aims of the study were to (1) achieve the right in-cylinder aerodynamics for H2 mixing, (2) find an H2 injection strategy to enhance the gas-gas mixing, and (3) mitigate autoignition.
