This July, join us in committing to one less plastic! We're encouraging you to swap out one single-use plastic item (like a water bottle or grocery bag) for something reusable. Did you know these bites were most likely made by turtles? 🐢 Join us in making a small, simple change that will move us toward a more sustainable future and a healthier Bay for all. 🌊 On July 27, we’ll also be teaming up with Greens Bayou Coalition and other Houston-area organizations to host a community cleanup at two sites - Brock Adventure Park and Brock Park Baseball Field. Register for the cleanup at https://lnkd.in/gxW2jq7U then #PledgeOneLessPlastic at https://lnkd.in/gEhVJc-K #Sustainability #ProtectTheBay

Today, Earth Day 2024, the League to Save Lake Tahoe stands proudly behind the groundbreaking single-use plastic water bottle ban in South Lake Tahoe and Truckee—a significant step in our ongoing mission to protect and preserve our beloved Lake. This transformative policy wasn't an overnight accomplishment; it is the fruit of a decade's worth of litter data collection, community engagement, and science-led initiatives. The League's approach has always been data-driven. From 2014 to 2023, through countless cleanup events, our volunteers have gathered substantial evidence of the plastic problem in the Basin, collecting over 20,100 plastic bottles, 31,300 plastic caps, and 163,800 pieces of unidentifiable plastic debris. Armed with this compelling data, we have raised awareness and crafted a narrative that spurred action and policy change. The League prepared for this transition by focusing on education and readiness. Our incredible Community Engagement team hit the streets, ensuring residents, visitors, and commercial vendors were prepared for the switch. Their hard work encouraged the adoption of sustainable alternatives and amplified the League's message that small changes in our daily habits can have a profound impact on our environment. Let's raise a glass (of clear and delicious Tahoe tap water) and join us in celebrating this pivotal movement. Support the cause, spread the word, and embrace the alternatives. #EarthDay2024 #PlasticFreeTahoe #DataDrivenChange #EnvironmentalEducation #KeepTahoeBlue #TahoevsPlastics

COO @ Keep Tahoe Blue | A people-focused nonprofit executive, mentor, and coach | Brings the gasoline to help organizations Burn it Down and reimagine what success can look like
This is a huge, proud moment for our team... because of the incredible community clean ups and data tracking efforts led by the League to Save Lake Tahoe, the city of South Lake Tahoe will officially ban single use plastic water bottles starting on Earth Day. From 2014 through 2023, our volunteers picked up/tracked 20,100 plastic bottles, 31,300 plastic caps and 163,800 unidentifiable plastic pieces. Coupling this data with the science showing the harm that microplastics can have on the environment and Lake clarity enabled more wide-spread support than may have otherwise been possible through a simple ban suggestion. Sometimes, making big change can feel like it requires dramatic effort, but the League to Save Lake Tahoe has been able to prove again and again that great policy can come from great science, and when science protects something as beautiful as Tahoe, it becomes possible. #environment #conservation #nonprofit #plastic #earthday

Every piece of trash carelessly discarded poses a grave threat to all the species; it contaminates water, is ingested by wildlife, pollutes the environment and affects the climate. Recognizing the urgent need for action, #HCLTechCanada volunteers, in partnership with A Greener Future, undertook a mission to clean up the shoreline at Jack Darling Memorial Park, Mississauga. We cleaned the shores, picking up litter and other pollutants to safeguard and support local marine life and ecosystems. 🐟🌱 Here are some numbers that reflect our collective effort: 👉 36 volunteers, dedicated 72 volunteer hours, collected 3,020 pieces of litter, including cigarette butts, plastic pieces, food wrappers, plastic and metal bottle caps, paper pieces and hygiene items. Impact: ✅ Cigarette butts we collected helped protect 703K liters of water from contamination. ✅ Plastic pieces we collected prevent 6.6 pounds of plastic from being ingested by wildlife. ✅ Food wrappers we collected divert 7.6 pounds of plastic waste from Lake Ontario. Thanks to our volunteers and #AGreenerFuture for organizing and supporting this initiative. Let's make a difference one piece at a time and build a sustainable environment. #SuperchargingProgress #CSRatHCLTech

For Earth Day we're sharing ways to embrace this year's theme of Planet vs Plastics and how our parks support positive change for the planet. Plastics pose serious environmental and health threats. Of the 9.1 billion tons of plastics that have been produced since mass use began in the 1950s, 79% remains in landfills or in the natural environment. Consumer plastics, especially for packaging and single-use plastics, make up a large percentage of that, which means mindful consumption can make a major impact. Switching to reusable water bottles, for example, can save an average of 156 plastic bottles per person each year. You can also seek out options for non-plastic containers, or switching to refillable products where possible, like those offered in Astoria by Earth and Me. As a waterfront community, Hunters Point is very vulnerable to climate change, but our parks can help mitigate some effects and help protect our local ecosystems. Parks play a huge role in helping to mitigate the heat island effect, which causes urban areas filled with concrete and other dark structures to be significantly hotter than tree- and grass-covered areas. You can see how large the effect is in NYC in this map from the NYC Council, where the parks in Hunters Point and Queensbridge cause significantly cooler areas than the surrounding buildings. Flooding is increasingly a concern, with sea level rise and an increase in heavy rain events from climate changes causing major challenges for NYC. Hunter's Point South Park was designed to help mitigate these challenges which features like bioswales, restored wetlands, riprap, and berms, which you can learn about on our website. These green infrastructure features provide protection but require a lot of maintenance - last year our volunteer groups removed over 2,000 bags of weeds. You can also help mitigate some of the water pollution during heavy rain by limiting your water use when possible during rainy days, as during rain events NYC's archaic sewage system dumps both rain and sewer water into our rivers and creeks at Combined Sewage Overflow sites. If you'd like to help your neighborhood ecosystem, you can join us at our community volunteer days on Thursdays and Saturdays in May at 10am, come out to I Love My Park Day on May 4, or make a donation to support the Conservancy's work.

Our #EarthDay appeal with Big Give is now live! 🎉 Meaning every pound we receive over the next week, will be matched at no extra cost to you. https://lnkd.in/eaRECQkF Our rivers are crisis! Our reliance on single-use plastics is adding unnecessary strain to these already struggling ecosystems, with a shocking 80% of the ocean’s plastic pollution travelling via our rivers 😲 Now more than ever, we need your help to continue our vital campaigning work to help keep our rivers and oceans plastic-free. Recent Marine Conservation Society beach clean data shows more than 480,000 items of litter found on UK beaches - with drinks-related litter one of the most found! By donating to our Earth Day appeal, YOU can do something about this. For ONE WEEK ONLY, every pound will be matched – so your £25 becomes £50 to go towards powering our campaigns like Refill to help keep our rivers and oceans plastic-free.

2024 is here For the holidays, I went to Sea Turtle Inc. on South Padre Island. In the picture, you can see a whale tail made fully out of plastic bottles(200). Trivia: In the time it took you to read this message, over 10,000 bottles were discarded all over the world. In addition, so many things that can’t be recycled should not go into the trash either. These are things such as regular batteries, light bulbs, water filters, pesticide bottles, plastic food wrappers, etc. In Texas, we say “Don’t Mess With Texas” to send the message of keeping trash out of nature. With Fun. Fit. Recycle. my goal in 2024 is to embrace that message. We are trying to keep these items out of the trash and reduce, reuse, recycle, and have fun while doing so! Trash doesn’t know geography. Wish you all a happy and healthy 2024! Cedar Ridge High School #teamseas #recycle #environment

World Cleanup Day. Let’s make a difference. Together Today, Millions of volunteers celebrate World Cleanup Day not just with words, but with action. We stand together, united by a common goal: a cleaner, healthier planet for all. Every piece of litter we pick up, every park we restore, every beach we clear of plastic, is a victory. It's a victory for our environment, for wildlife, for our health, and for future generations. This isn't just about cleaning up the mess we see. It's about changing our habits, raising awareness, and inspiring others to join the movement. Let's choose reusable bags over plastic ones. Let's recycle diligently. Let's teach our children the importance of respecting our planet. Today, let's make a difference. Let's show the world that we care. Let's make every day a clean-up day! #worldcleanupday #cleanupday #clean #20sept2024
