When you spend a lot of time learning more and more about the climate crisis, it is easy to get overwhelmed by eco-anxiety. Whenever I feel paralyzed by this type of fear, I revisit some incredibly helpful principles of "Climate Optimism" by Zahra Biabani. - Climate optimism is the proclamation of hope for a healthier and more just planet and the pursuit of actions aligned with what needs to be done to get there. - The amount of transformational change needed to fight the climate crisis cannot happen without optimism. Distraction, doubt, and despair are heavy burdens that we can no longer afford to drag. - Increased global connectivity harnessed by social media, in conjunction with the various cognitive biases inflamed by media consumption, has enhanced our interpretation of conflicts, including those related to the climate crisis. - We need to do the following to regain enough hope and motivation to continue to fight the climate crisis. 1. Overcome information overload: Know when to stop doom scrolling, hold your sources accountable for proper and robust citations, ask yourself the provider's intentions of the information. 2. Overcome the negativity bias that is entrenched by the media and our brains: find positive news sources to follow. 3. Overcome the privilege gap: follow the Most Affected People and Areas (MAPA) activists, unpack your biases about your view of countries in the Global South and how you speak about them, acknowledge your privileges that protect you from the climate crisis. 4. Overcome failure of imagination: practice envisioning what a just climate for all would look like, tell people what our future will look like if we fail to take action now on the climate crisis, read about the solutions. 5. Break free of echo chambers: make it a point to engage with opinions that you do not fully agree with. NEW BOOK ALERT, Excerpt 1 - Preface. [On writing about climate, the inevitability of Bad Warming, resiliency, summer of 2023, failed Pascalian wagers, increased urgency of mitigation, climate doomerism, questions over answers, how to prepare our kids.] I’ve been writing and thinking about climate risk all my adult life. The books I’ve written reflect that arc: it’s possible to mitigate the risk if we try; hidden barriers prevent us from acting with vigour; an economically radical but politically neutral rewiring of our economy can get the job done. Despite cheerleading for action, my own thinking has long shifted from cautious optimism to a deep, thudding pessimism. From mitigating climate risk to building resilience. Asked publicly ‘can we solve this problem?’ my answer was always ‘Yes, if we try hard enough’. Privately, over a beer, my response became ‘It’s too late to ‘solve’ it. We need to think about resilience now.’ This book is the talk we’d have over that beer. It’s not an easy process to start. Previous writing was about upside, reasons to hope climate action could not just preserve what we have but make us better off – a call to action! In 2009, Kick the Fossil Fuel Habit: Ten Technologies to Save Our World gave examples to show it was possible to get off the carbon train. We can if we try! In 2012 Waking the Frog: Solutions to our Climate Change Paralysis identified hidden barriers to action, from the psychology of denial to the bias of economic models. Here’s how to leap into action! In 2020, The Case for Climate Capitalism: Economic Solutions to a Planet in Crisis made a pragmatic case to bridge the gap between left and right, business and environment. I urged business leaders to jump on the climate issue if only to preserve the economic system they take for granted. And environmentalists might reform, rather than reject, capitalism itself if only because we have no time for la revolution. We can still do this together! There’s no such upside here.
