Last week I had the honor to hold a speech at the closing dinner of Least Developed Countries (LDC) Future Forum arranged by United Nations and Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland. In my speech I emphasized the opportunities and space for young people to take part in decisionmaking and bringing up their ideas. It is not only the resources provided but also about the values of the society and attitudes towards youth. I encourage decisionmakers to be brave enough to create the space and opportunities for youth. We need to work together for sustainable future and make sure no one gets left behind. I do not talk that much about my history but there has been certain times where I feel that it is important to share that. The theme of opportunities for youth is personally important to me, because I come from a background where attending these kinds of events was not an opportunity I was even aware of. In our small town of 3500 inhabitants, we did not have a Youth City Council at that time and all in all, the free time activities were quite limited. I am the first University student in both sides of my family and therefore, University was at times painful when people were speeking and acting in an unfamiliar way. And talking about speeches, I held my first public speech at the age of 22 and that was awful. No offense to younger me but seriously, awful. I am grateful for everything I have had the opportunity to participate and also for the background I have. Coming from this kind of background gives me perspective of how people do not start from the same line. Of course, Finland is one of the most equal countries and therefore my perspective comes still from a very privileged viewpoint. I have to say, that I have experienced warm welcomes in many places, no matter my background. I feel extremely privileged which is why I want to share my experience and knowledge as well as promote the equal participation for youth, especially for those with fewer possibilities. We definitely should not leave no one behind, neither on a national nor global level. All in all, it is about the belief and trust in young people and supporting them that matters. Istanbul Youth Summit 2025 Apply to attend the Istanbul Youth Summit 2025

This week, I had the incredible honor of participating in the Youth 7 (Y7) Summit 2024 in Rome, expertly chaired and organized by the Young Ambassadors society (YAS). As the official engagement group of the G7 and G20 for young people, the YAS plays a crucial role in amplifying youth voices on the global stage. The summit was an enriching experience, where I had the privilege of engaging with inspiring leaders and experts to discuss pivotal topics such as Innovation and Digital Transformation. Through these discussions, it became clear that urgent action is needed in three key areas: 1) Safeguard Democracy and Inclusion in Innovation 2) Protect Digital Users 3) Foster International Collaboration for Sustainable Innovation I left the summit inspired and motivated to advocate for these critical changes. In our latest op-ed, my colleague Stefano Manservisi and I argue that while nations such as the USA and China are actively training a critical mass of African leaders, the EU is noticeably behind. It is crucial for Brussels to accelerate its efforts. A strong and prosperous Africa benefits everyone. By investing in Africa's youth, the EU is investing in its future. The responsibility lies with Africa and its partners, including Europe, to provide young Africans with the resources they need for effective leadership. This initiative will enhance the global influence of both Europe and Africa. Roles for youth and the SDGs Critical thinkers: Part of being young involves making sense of personal experiences and asking questions about the world around you. Youth have the capacity to identify and challenge existing power structures and barriers to change, and to expose contradictions and biases Change-makers: Young people also have the power to act and mobilise others. Youth activism is on the rise the world over, bolstered by broader connectivity and access to social media. Innovators: In addition to bringing fresh perspectives, young people often have direct knowledge of and insights into issues that are not accessible to adults. Youth best understand the problems they face and can offer new ideas and alternative solutions. Communicators: Outside the international development sector, few people are aware that world leaders have come to a historic, far-reaching agreement to improve the lives of people and the planetby 2030. Young people can be partners in communicating the development agenda to their peers and communities at the local level, as well as across countries and regions. Leaders: When young people are empowered with the knowledge of their rights and equipped with leadership skills, they can drive change in their communities and countries. Youth-led organisations and networks, in particular, should be supported and strengthened, because they contribute to the development of civic leadership skills among young people, especially marginalised youth. https://lnkd.in/dgpECTN2

Looking ahead to Africa's goal of becoming a global leader by 2063, it's clear that young people are crucial for our continent's future. The African Union's Agenda 2063 highlights the importance of youth involvement in all areas. Youth initiatives should focus on community efforts, inclusivity, and empowerment. By supporting and developing young leaders, we contribute to sustainable development and inclusive growth. Involving young people in every sector will help us reach the African Union's vision.
