DO YOU PROTECT YOUR CANDIDATES? If your candidate does something wrong or that might irritate your client, do you take the blame? Or do you let the client know you are spotless and let the candidate take the blame? I always take the blame. I always want the client to think the best of the candidate. The reason is that when you place freelance contractors you might be placing them several times a year. Or it might take a couple of opportunities before the candidate gets the assignment if you are dealing with a consultancy or middleman. When it comes to placing permies, the same rules apply in that your role is to advocate for the candidate you have placed to ensure their experience reflects your values and approach to the process. Your legacy and reputation is as important as the experience as the company they work for. I even go further than that and make sure that I bring bad news to the client and the candidate only brings good news. Things like not extending, wanting a rate increase, not being interested in an assignment, etc., I communicate when it comes to freelance candidates. Likewise, if a permie is experiencing adversity within an organisation or feedback from the client is filtering through in unexpected or negative ways, your role is to find solutions that benefit your candidate to ensure the placement is as secure and enduring as you’d set out for it to be. You never know when you need a candidate to look good in the eyes of a client.
