The prospects for European access to space in the institutional and commercial sectors were the main topic of today's #ILA24 stage panel with Pierre Godart, Jörn Spurmann, Toni Tolker-Nielsen, Dr. Claus Lippert and Ulrich Scheib The main messages in a nutshell: It is time for the European launchers 🚀🚀, especially Ariane 6, Vega and Microlaunchers. We expect the first flight of A6 and a second flight at the end of this year, two launches of Vega and the first flight of RF1. These launches will highlight our challenges for 2025 and provide an opportunity to prepare the future of European space transportation. "Our technology is at the cutting edge worldwide and we are a key player in the global market. We are the right enablers and our industry is globally competitive" concluded Ulrich Scheib in the panel discussion.  Space as a safe environment, open to exploration, peaceful use and international cooperation by current and future generations, this is the concept at the heart of IAC2024, dedicated to the theme “Responsible Space for Sustainability”, organised by the International Astronautical Federation and hosted in Italy by the AIDAA - The Italian Association of Aeronautics and Astronautics , with the support of #Leonardo and the Italian Space Agency (Agenzia Spaziale Italiana).   💡 ASI, in collaboration with AIDAA and Leonardo, has launched a Call for Ideas to invite third and fourth years of Italian secondary schools, in Italy and abroad, to reflect on the theme of sustainability and to delve into its contents. The challenge is to develop a project proposal that answers one of the following questions:   ◾ How to use space technologies to make our Planet more sustainable?   ◾ How can Space and space exploration be made more sustainable?   ◾ How can Italy be the engine of space sustainability?   🎯 The aim of the proposals is to use space science and technology to make the Planet and Space more sustainable, as well as to use satellite or mission data and services to improve the status of one or more of the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. After many long hours, working through the night, plenty of sacrifices, tense moments during countdown and hot-fire tests – as well as months spent in masks and keeping a safe distance during the COVID-19 pandemic – Space Team Europe has done it. Ariane 6 took flight on 9 July 2024 and restored Europe’s autonomous access to space. Thousands of people from different backgrounds, with different nationalities and speaking different languages all united around a shared vision: taking Europe to space. Thank you Space Team Europe for your commitment, incredible team spirit and expertise. Go Ariane 6! Ariane 6 launched on 9 July 2024 from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana at 16:00 local time (20:00 BST, 21:00 CEST). Europe’s newest heavy-lift rocket, it is designed to provide great power and flexibility at a lower cost than its predecessors. The launcher’s configuration – with an upgraded main stage, a choice of either two or four powerful boosters and a new restartable upper stage – will provide Europe with greater efficiency and possibility as it can launch multiple missions into different orbits on a single flight.
