Communication skills are vital in clinical research for several reasons: 1. Informed Consent: Researchers need to effectively communicate the purpose, risks, benefits, and procedures involved in a study to participants, ensuring they fully understand what they’re consenting to. 2. Data Collection: Clear communication between researchers and participants ensures accurate and reliable data collection, which is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the research. 3. Collaboration: Clinical research often involves multidisciplinary teams, including physicians, nurses, statisticians, and administrators. Effective communication ensures that everyone is on the same page, coordinating efforts, and sharing important information. 4. Problem Solving: Research studies may encounter unexpected challenges or deviations from the original plan. Good communication skills enable researchers to quickly identify and address these issues, minimizing disruptions to the study. 5. Ethical Considerations: Clear and transparent communication is essential for upholding ethical standards in clinical research, including respecting participants’ rights, maintaining confidentiality, and disclosing conflicts of interest. 6. Dissemination of Findings: Researchers must communicate their findings accurately and effectively to the scientific community through publications, presentations, and conferences, advancing knowledge and informing future research and clinical practice. Overall, strong communication skills enhance the efficiency, credibility, and ethical conduct of clinical research, ultimately benefiting both researchers and participants.

Transitioning from academic research to a clinical research role at a medical device company can be both exciting and challenging. There are some key considerations. One of these is Mindset Shift – Recognising the difference between the corporate world and academia. 1. Outcome Focus: In academia, research often revolves around publishing papers and advancing knowledge. In industry, the focus shifts to practical outcomes that encompasses consideration of the business goal and the real-world impact such as improving patient care or developing innovative medical devices. This means finding the answer for a particular research question may sometimes be an interest for the academic community but not necessarily matching the need of business advancement. To help with the mindset shift, I would like to think of it as applying a scope to the advancement of knowledge and that is to focus on advancing knowledge that leads to achieving the business goal and thereby making a real-world impact in improving patient care. 2. Collaboration: The nature of collaboration in academia is different from industry. In academia, collaboration is often between researchers of similar training or background but with different skill sets and research expertise. The team comes together to participate in a project utilizing their expertise and skills. This often means if I am good at statistic then that’s the part I’ll be in charge of whilst someone else will be in charge of another part that utilizes their area of expertise. In industry, you’ll work closely with cross-functional teams—engineers, regulatory experts, clinicians, and marketers. Since the training and knowledge area is so vastly different, the way of thinking, the language each speaks, their perspective / focus / concerns are often drastically different. It can sometimes be like people coming from different countries, the language and cultures are different. Patience, effective communication and the strive for teamwork are critical. Embrace the difference, stay curious on what others can offer and be humble about how little we know.

❓ Medical Technologies Innovation Facility is working with groups of Nottingham Trent University Psychology students to assist us with a real-world challenge. We want to understand the barriers involved in accessing and sharing public healthcare data such as medical records. The sharing of healthcare data could lead to greater efficiency, improvements of service provision, and faster innovation in Medical Technologies. Everyday the public openly share consumer activity and personal data on the internet and on social media. This data is consistently misused and sold for profit but it is something most people regularly give consent to. The sharing of healthcare data across the NHS and other public sector organisations could be hugely beneficial for our society, but often it is hard to gain consent. We are looking forward to seeing the outcomes of the projects and hopefully gaining more of an understanding about public perceptions to sharing healthcare data. #MTIF #ntu #studentprojects #worklikeexperience

Winning EU projects can be a challenging task. The Medical University of Lodz recently celebrated its success in winning an #eithealth Flagship project from the CEE, competing against top universities🍾. This achievement can be attributed to several factors that have contributed to the continuous growth of MUL over the last eight years. -One crucial factor is their easygoing hospitality. Corporate partners like Roche remember their first encounter with MUL as a pleasant experience. While people may read scientific papers, they prefer to work with people they like. -MUL has a compelling story of taking responsibility for regional development and offering access to local assets. -They have always invested in advance, sending a whole team when others arrive at matchmaking with a single person. As a result, they have returned with valuable ideas, connections, and project opportunities, which they have translated into actionable steps. -The MUL representatives are experienced and knowledgeable about the system, having worked at the university for years. They trust each other and represent the interests of others who are absent, with the mandate to negotiate. Partners appreciate this approach, as they don't like to hear, "I have to ask my boss." -MUL has always been visible, raising their hands and proposing collaborations. They offer services and work packages immediately instead of just presenting raw assets, like thousands of hospital beds. They never give up, follow up with contacts and get involved. It is the right attitude. -They also pick up smaller work packages, building trust and learning from participation before they can win their own project. In conclusion, this success can be attributed to a particular mentality and steady progress, which has been evident in MUL's approach. We wish them continued success in the future, as they undoubtedly deserve it👏. Prof. Lucyna Wozniak, PhD, DSc. Bartlomiej Grobelski Aneta Andrzejczyk Marcin Ciszewski, Ph.D. Joanna Broy Mikołaj Gurdała Marta Kaczmarek Ferenc Pongracz, PhD, MBA
