We are thrilled to share that a bipartisan resolution was introduced in the US House of Representatives designating June 20, 2024 as World FSHD Day. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) introduced the resolution with the support of Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA), both noting the importance of this day for improving awareness and education about FSHD; encouraging accurate and early diagnosis; supporting funding for research and treatment development; and advancing programs that support individuals living with FSHD and their caregivers. Since our founding in 2015, Fulcrum has been driven by a commitment to make a difference for patients with FSHD. Today, we celebrate the hard work of our partners at the FSHD Society and the resilience of the FSHD patient and caregiver community. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eXzjgaQ5 #WorldFSHDDay

According to the LBDA, "LBD affects every aspect of a person – their mood, the way they think, and the way they move. People with LBD and their families will need considerable resources and assistance from healthcare professionals and agencies. The combination of cognitive, motor and behavioral symptoms creates a highly challenging set of demands for continuing care. LBDA was formed to help families address many of these challenges." A systematic review of 57 studies into palliative care (PC) best practices recently appeared in Age and Ageing journal. It identified standardized interdisciplinary team meetings, volunteer involvement, and early intervention as the keys for successful PC intervention. Community health workers were also identified as impactful. These components led to more home deaths, less hospitalizations, and higher patient and family satisfaction. It is vital to understand the mechanics of why PC works. Research shows that people experiencing domestic and family violence (DFV) tend to speak about their situation to family or friends first, and then their GP. Women are twice as likely to disclose DFV and abuse if they’re asked by their GP or nurse in the general practice. That’s why – in partnership with Wentworth Healthcare Limited, provider of the Nepean Blue Mountains Primary Health Network – we offer free training to better equip GPs and health professionals to recognise DFV in their patients, respond safely to disclosures, and refer them to appropriate services in their area. Our DFV Linker service provides free, safe and confidential support to anyone experiencing DFV in the Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury, Lithgow and Penrith Regions, via their local GP or health professional. To access the service, anyone can book an appointment with their GP and let them know they’d like a referral to DFV Linker. If you're a GP or allied health professional, visit our website to learn how our training can help you provide potentially life-saving support to your clients. #enddomesticviolence #domesticviolenceawareness

A new open access article from Nova Fellow Carley Riley and colleagues investigates barriers to interventions such as Infant Well Child Visits (WCVs) and underscores the importance of caregiver perspectives when designing interventions. WCVs provide an opportunity for children and families to receive support and prevent adverse health outcomes, however, babies of low-income and Black families often do not receive the recommended schedule of visits. Community peer researchers interviewed caregivers who were primarily Black and insured through Medicaid, finding that they often relied on family and community guidance for healthcare decisions and cited racism, perceived judgment, and being rushed as significant barriers to WCV attendance. This study highlighted themes of trust, empathy, shared decision-making, and racial concordance between medical providers and caregivers as critical factors in promoting WCV attendance. Authors also point to several opportunities for systemic improvements in intervention design and implementation and future directions for research. Read: https://ow.ly/8TlY50RKjTr

The HEADs Up Act 🧩🌟 This piece of legislation will play an incredibly crucial role in helping individuals with intellectual and Developmental Disabilities get access to healthcare, oral healthcare, and behavioral healthcare. Here’s what you need to know 👇 🌟 The HEADS UP Act is legislation that was introduced to Congress May 16, 2023. It was introduced by US Representatives Seth Moulton (D-MA-06), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA-01), Debbie Dingell (D-MI-06) and Joseph Morelle (D-NY-25) There will be a Lobby Day at the US Capitol July 23, 2024, to advocate for the HEADs UP Act! We are honored that one of our board members, Sean B., will be in attendance. 🌟 If the HEADs UP Act is passed, it will allow the United States Department of Health and Human Services to award grants to health centers that provide care to individuals with I/DD. 🌟 Many individuals with I/DD need access to specialized care making it incredibly difficult to get basic primary care. The HEADs UP Act aims to fund organizations making treatment better, more personalized, and more readily available to these underserved communities.
