In partnership with iStart Rajasthan and DOIT&C, Frontier Markets' Sahelis are not just helping rural households, but also working towards elevating their income which is a critical step towards empowering women and breaking down barriers in these communities. Studies have shown that when women engage in economic activity outside the family, they gain greater decision-making power within the household and more control over resources. By providing visibility and recognition, these Sahelis are able to connect these small businesses with potential new customers and expand their reach. This initiative has the potential to foster a network of women entrepreneurs, allowing them to share knowledge, collaborate, and access new opportunities. The impact of this initiative extends far beyond the individual women involved. Increased income translates to better living standards for their families and communities. A thriving network of women-led businesses contributes to the economic development of rural areas. Furthermore, empowered women are more likely to invest in their children's education and health, creating a cycle of positive change that benefits future generations. Through this initiative, Frontier Markets isn't just supporting individual women entrepreneurs; we're fostering a more equitable and prosperous future for rural India. In rural Rajasthan, self-help groups do not allow women with 'Ghoonghats' to enter. Ghoonghats are a symbol of dependency - On the husband, the in-laws and the society. But why do self-help groups not allow these women to participate wearing a ghoonghat? Because removing the Ghoonghat is the 1st step towards bringing a change in mindset. Joining a SHG for a rural woman is no less than fighting a battle - - Removing the ghoonghat - Stepping out of her home - Redefining their role in the society - Facing resistance While urban India talks about why more women should join boardrooms, here are these women, struggling with problems we would call “basic”. In the last 16 years with Rang De, I have visited many such villages. And every time I return to Bangalore, I feel like we have achieved anything! It’s expensive to be poor in India, but it’s 10x more difficult to be a rural woman entrepreneur. Because their struggles don’t begin at “credit access” or “employee churn rate”. It begins when they choose to step out of the house. At Rang De, our social investors empower every woman who chooses to break free from dependency. When you make a social investment on Rang De, it’s worth a lot more than just financial returns. They send a message to such rural entrepreneurs in bringing a social transformation. Visit our P2P social investment platform and read the amazing stories of rural female entrepreneurs. Link in the comments.

Bali Devi, a 56-year-old widow in Jaipur, India, represents millions of women in the informal sector facing economic challenges. Shruti Gonsalves founded Sitara, a housing finance company within SEWA, helping thousands access affordable housing loans. Despite India's economic growth, poverty and gender inequality persist, with women's labor force participation at a low 24%. Women entrepreneurs like Sweta Mangal of Ziqitza and Neha Juneja of Greenway Grameen are addressing critical issues like maternal health and indoor air pollution. These ventures not only improve lives but also offer profitable returns, showcasing the potential of women-led startups. Despite their success, women-led startups receive disproportionately less venture capital funding globally. Encouraging investment in women entrepreneurs could transform both economic outcomes and gender equality, exemplified by the impactful work of Shruti, Sweta, and Neha.

Our goal is to ensure financial stability and digital literacy for every woman in Bharat, fostering economic independence and self-reliance. Together, we can create a powerful pathway for rural women to achieve their full potential. #ChaloBharat #WomenEmpowerment #DigitalNaari #LakhpatiDidi #RuralDevelopment #FinancialInclusion #PayNearby #EmpowerBharat
India lives in her villages, and rural development remains a top priority for the government. As our new Rural Development Minister, #ShivrajSinghChouhan ji emphasizes, the 'Lakhpati Didi' scheme is a key initiative aimed at enabling women to earn ₹1 lakh annually. With the goal of increasing the number of ‘Lakhpati Didis’ from one crore to three crores, this scheme is central to the government’s mission of women empowerment. At PayNearby, our #DigitalNaari programme aligns perfectly with this mission. The objective is to establish a sustainable micro-entrepreneurial environment that elevates 1 million Digital Naaris into Lakhpati Didis within the next five years, while also empowering 100 million women in remote areas toward a digitally and financially inclusive future through these community influencers. Today, we have more than 1,50,000 Digital Naaris across Bharat who have benefitted from this program and have gained the financial and social confidence to transform their own lives and those of their families. We will continue to work with all relevant stakeholders in this space- national and state livelihood programs, NGOs, SHG groups—for capacity building and ground level transformation, to take the women of Bharat to the next level of growth and development.
