95% of donations at many small institutions come from 5% of donors. There is a problem with this. When the interests of these few donors change, institutions can find their funding and projects at risk. Institutions can solve this by broadening their donor base beyond their 'rich' alumni. Here's a 3-step approach: 1. First Step: Identify Current Societal Issues → Understand what matters to people today, like political division concerns. → How can our institution's mission align with these values? 2. Communicate Relevant Impact: → Showcase how contributions can foster progress on critical societal issues on our campus. → Highlight the institution's role in promoting values like democracy. 3. Last, Engage and Attract Diverse Donors: → Reach out to potential donors interested in the causes. → Offer them a chance to contribute to meaningful change through their donations. This strategy: Diversifies our donor base. Bridges the geopolitical gap. Strengthens our institution's relevance. Differentiation is key. When we pay attention to what matters, we promote values that align with our audience and improve our messaging to reach a diverse crowd.
