Earlier this week I hosted the #WomenInPower alumni session. It was such a good reminder of why Saralyn and I created Women In Power. We had great conversations on cultural norms and expectations, motherhood, white supremacy, expectations, and leadership. Every single one of the participants wanted to figure out how to give back and continue creating spaces for honest, vulnerable, curiosity-filled conversations. I think we have that figured out! We're going to start hosting quarterly (maybe more often, if there's interest) brown-bag #livedexperience conversations where folks can drop in and join the conversation or simply listen in and enjoy. Saralyn and I hosted one last week to demonstrate what we do in #WomenInPower and it was so much fun. The biggest lesson was that we all have divergent lived experiences and sharing them with each other means our narratives and stories that are much richer and we are better leaders. The history of humanity is full of courageous women who have risen above, led nations, states and, even participated in wars and close combat, but, ironically, the word 'stoicism' with all of its characteristic elements, cultural narratives, and references has been mostly embedded in patriarchal history. Not only this but the very branding of stoicism has been systemically associated with men. I often think that while it's harder to unbundle a highly skewed and almost unilaterally gendered view of stoicism disproportionately branded with men, there should be an equivalent terminology/lexicon that should represent stoicism in women. Let's start by coining a term for stoic women. Let's brainstorm. If one is to coin the term for stoicism in women/stoic women, what it should be?
