One of the incredible things about participating in an excellent accelerator program like Startup Wise Guys is getting to know impressive projects and brilliant founders.
Many people here don't know, but in 2008, I decided to open a small restaurant, turning a hobby into work. I left the advertising agency where I worked to start a new work routine in the kitchen of a restaurant with only 24 seats, called Varekay.
I almost lost my taste for my hobby. Managing a restaurant can be a nightmare. One of the biggest challenges we faced was managing orders and suppliers. It took an absurd amount of time - everything was done by phone or physically - and any mistake could cause us a big problem. I preferred spending 6 hours in the kitchen than 2 hours dealing with suppliers, I confess.
Then, during the acceleration program, I met Jack Clegg and the concept of Platter, his startup. I don't think I ever told him how impressed I was with the proposal he presented in his pitch deck. Jack grew up within the industry he decided to change, knew the problem, and developed the solution with incredible expertise. If there had been a Platter in 2008, maybe I would never have given up on Varekay.
If you own a restaurant, I advise you to keep an eye on Platter.
