This week we were joined by Gabrielle Reid, Associate Director, Strategic Intelligence at S-RM, Kuseni Dlamini, Chairman at Aspen Pharma Group, Mali Aurelien, Senior Analytical Advisor – Africa at Moody's Ratings, Junior John Ngulube, Chairman at Marsh South Africa and Nicky Weimar, Chief Economist at Nedbank for a webinar on, ‘Charting the Course: South Africa’s Political Landscape in 2024 & Beyond’. 30 years on from the inauguration of the country’s democracy, this year’s general election in South Africa represents a landmark moment for the country, with the possibility of the African National Congress not maintaining its majority for the first time since 1994. Some of the key takeaways from the discussion include: - Mali Aurelien highlighted the obstacles associated with South Africa’s credit rating, which is currently at its lowest point in 15 years, presenting challenges for the incumbent government, social risks, weakened public finance and high debt servicing costs will make it challenging to maintain strong levels of capital inflows. - Junior John Ngulube discussed how business strategy is built on certainty, and the risk of change is what companies across South Africa are concerning themselves with. This, however, presents opportunities for growth and effective policy reform. - Kuseni Dlamini highlighted the positive signs emerging in South Africa’s business landscape ahead of the election, emphasizing the work that the private sector is doing with the government, citing improved energy security as an example. The population is increasingly demanding more of its government, which is a sign of a maturing democracy. - Nicky Weimar warned businesses to brace themselves for a high degree of uncertainty. She continued by saying that increased political competition is a positive sign, however it needs to result in increased accountability and improved policy reform to empower the most vulnerable across the country. We would like to thank our speakers for their insights, as well as those who joined us for the session. Politics' role is to facilitate such that businesses can be succesful (and sustainable please). Quite the balancing act though between safeguarding fair competition and supporting EU competitiveness on the global market.
