Are projects more than just work for you? The respondents to the Freelancer Study 2024 clearly say yes. Our experts, Peter Balog and Jon Younger, also note that work is no longer just work - especially for younger generations. The number one value that freelancers expect from the corporate culture of their project providers is sustainability. In second place is equal pay: our newest study shows that the gender pay gap in freelancing is narrowing. Incentives, whether material or financial, are in last place. On the other hand, by far the most common reason for freelancers to reject projects is a low hourly rate. You can find the link to our full report in the comments. How do you see it? What not to say to women freelancers, vol 1: “Just charge more! It’s really that simple.” 🥴 👆This advice is in pretty much every freelance guide, ever. Except it’s NOT that simple. 🤑 Freelance women earn 48% less per hour than men. 🛠️ Freelance women are consistently seen as less committed and competent. ⛔ Freelance women have less access to opportunities compared to men. Many women, myself included, go freelance to avoid hitting the glass ceiling in a company, only to run into glass walls instead. And in our lovely glass mazes, we’re still not getting paid close to what men are. And even if we DID close that gender pay gap dollar for dollar, it still wouldn’t fix anything: Raising our rates won’t make clients see us as more competent or committed. Raising our rates won’t stop the assumption that we’re busy with family commitments. Raising our rates won’t fix the systemic and structural issues that perpetuate pay inequity. So what helps? 💡 Refer and recommend women freelancers 💡 Promote pay transparency and share your rates 💡 Collaborate equitably in mutual projects 💡 Advocate for equal pay — whether it’s a speaking engagement or a project [Image: The "two buttons" meme where a cartoon man is stuck in indecision between two buttons. The first button says "Offer nuanced, supportive advice to women freelancers". The second button says "Just tell them to raise their rates".]

Is Freelancing secure for women?? Freelancing offers great flexibility and a variety of projects, but how secure is it for women? Here's a simplified take: Financial Stability: Freelancing can sometimes lead to unpredictable income streams, which might impact financial security. This is a concern for anyone in the freelance market, not just women. However, with proper planning, diversification of income sources, and building a solid client base, many freelancers find it to be a viable and financially rewarding career path. Personal Safety: Since freelancers often work remotely, personal safety in the physical sense is less of a concern than it might be in traditional office settings. Nonetheless, meeting new clients or working in shared spaces can present safety considerations. It’s important to take precautions such as vetting clients, using reputable freelance platforms that have safety measures in place, and choosing public or secure places for meetings if necessary. Protection Against Harassment and Discrimination: Harassment and discrimination are significant concerns in all workplace settings, including freelancing. Women freelancers may face gender bias, unequal pay, or harassment from clients. To mitigate these risks, it's crucial to work through reputable platforms that offer dispute resolution and support services, and to have clear contracts and communication channels. Additionally, being part of freelancer networks or associations can provide a support system and resources for dealing with these issues. In summary, while freelancing offers flexibility and a wide range of opportunities, it also comes with challenges. Women, like all freelancers, need to be proactive in managing financial stability, ensuring personal safety, and protecting themselves against harassment or discrimination. With the right strategies and support, freelancing can indeed be a secure and rewarding career choice for women. p.s : What about your thoughts Guys on these points of secured freelancing ??? #linkedindaily #linkedingrowth #contentcreator #freelancegraphicdesigner #womeninbusiness #womenempowerment

It’s been so tough for us all in the film industry these last few years and I know I’m not alone what with 80% if freelancers out of work. This worries me greatly that our wonderful industry that I care so much about and have worked in for the past 25 years isn’t providing a living for so many skilled and professional people. The final comment could be me and I know that so many of us feel this way and that most of us can relate. I don’t have the answers on how to fix this but what I have learned through my health and fitness journey over the last 10 years going from the couch (2014) to Ironman (2018) and dropping 100lb / 46kg has helped me in so many ways that I take daily into my professional and family life; I’ve learned to let go of the things out of my control and focus on the things that I can control, the way I think, the way I react to any given situation, to help people that I care about has given me some comfort in these rather challenging times. I’ve worked hard to be consistent in my health, fitness and family, to work on my life-blend understanding that things don’t always have to be balanced, to take joy from the smaller things in life and that in these moments of troubled times, the storm will pass, we will grow as people, form new pathways, relationshipsand and become stronger and more resilient that ever before. We will prioritise what’s really important in life and look forward to a brighter future taking comfort in that age old saying “what doesn’t kill ya makes us stronger” and I truly believe that ‘together we are stronger’ and with a strong community we are capable of achieving great things and I hope that our future is one of change that offers stability, transparency, open & honest dialogue creating opportunities for all. Bectu shared some typical comments from freelancers who completed the survey, “I lost my job while pregnant and I don’t qualify for maternity pay either. The loss of my job has put great stress and anxiety on my first pregnancy. I am so disheartened by the industry and how disposable we are to productions. We have not heard anything from the production since our last day of work in July.” “I don’t see myself continuing to work in this industry. Situations like this cause so much stress financially on top of the stress the industry can already have while you’re working. It’s so volatile and you do need tough skin and a plan. I know a lot of people living paycheck to paycheck. The industry was flooded with more work and more workers after lockdown and now there’s no work.” 👉🏻 “After being one of the forgotten many who fell through the cracks during the pandemic and received absolutely no financial support from the government, to now be in an even worse financial position is mind blowing and infuriating. I’ve spent so long surviving instead of thriving, and I’m tired.” #film #tv #entertainmentindustry #freelancer #bectu #sag #surviving #not #thriving #togetherwearestronger
