🚀 Nokia: Bringing 4G to the Moon! 🌕 Nokia is making history by establishing the first-ever cellular network on the Moon. This visionary project, generously backed by NASA’s Tipping Point initiative , aims to showcase the pivotal role of cellular technology in meeting communication demands for forthcoming lunar and Martian missions. In an incredible collaboration, Nokia has partnered with Intuitive Machines and Lunar Outpost for the groundbreaking uncrewed lunar mission, IM-2. This mission is set to touch down at the Moon's south pole and is slated for launch within a three-month window commencing November 2023. Nokia Bell Labs has ingeniously engineered a space-hardened, energy-efficient 4G/LTE microcell specifically tailored for this mission. This network is meticulously designed to withstand the arduous journey to the Moon and endure the extreme temperature fluctuations, radiation, and environmental challenges of lunar terrain. The lunar 4G/LTE system consists of two integral components. Firstly, a base station unit will be seamlessly integrated into Intuitive Machines' Nova-C lander, functioning as the cell-site for the Moon network. Secondly, radio equipment will be deployed on two lunar vehicles: Lunar Outpost’s Mobile Autonomous Prospecting Platform (MAPP) rover and Intuitive Machines’ Micro-Nova hopper. Together, these radio components will forge a network, enabling efficient communication between the lander and vehicles. A robust direct-to-Earth radio connection from the lander will serve as a lifeline, transmitting data, images, and facilitating remote operations via the cellular network. Thierry Klein, President of Bell Labs Solutions Research at Nokia, emphasizes, "Communications, like shelter and sustenance, hold paramount importance for future lunar and Mars endeavors. Instead of reinventing the wheel, we're leveraging state-of-the-art technologies that unite billions of smartphones on Earth." Klein adds, "Our fascination with space has only deepened in the 21st century. As we venture further into space, communications remain indispensable. Nokia stands ready to embark on this cosmic journey." These colourful auroras were visible much farther south than usual, with the northern lights seen as far south as Florida and Mexico and the southern lights visible in New Zealand, Australia, Chile and Argentina. 🛰 CesiumAstro Marks TRL 9 Milestone with NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Starling Mission 🚀   CesiumAstro is celebrating a significant achievement in collaboration with NASA's Starling Mission. The CommPack cross-link communications payload, integrated into the CubeSats, has successfully completed its initial tests, elevating its technology readiness level (TRL) to 9, the highest attainable. 🌐📡   Shey Sabripour, founder and CEO of CesiumAstro, commends NASA's successful launch and operation of the Starling Mission. Space amongst all the different fields of interest, Goddard Space Flight Center amongst all the different work places, and LISA of all the modern collaborative projects are special. Perhaps more so since they all utilize the whole length and breath of modern academic and industrial expertise. This week we are relishing the nectar of ultraprecision metrology through the incredible presentations at the #LISASymposiumDublin. The energy and optimism of achieving the adoption milestones is omnipresent. These milestones might have been deemed difficult if not impossible metely a decade ago (pre-LIGO and Lisa Pathfinder era) and it took the best of collective global ingenuity by the #LISACommunity to see the light across the tunnel. It's a remarkable achievement to have LISA adopted as a project by European Space Agency - ESA, with NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration hopefully en route with its efforts in the last few months at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, as the team prepares for the SRR and KDP reviews.
